Six weeks later, Andrés's dislocated ankle had finally healed. During his recovery, he had helped Benjamín run the inventory and manage the accounting of the bakery. Now it was time for him to leave, a decision driven by his desire to protect both Benjamín and Alicia.

As he finished packing his bag, he glanced at the box containing the jewelry. It remained in perfect condition despite being dropped and jostled in his backpack several times. While lost in thought, he noticed Alicia standing in the doorway. He looked at her, and her piercing blue eyes captivated him. She smiled and walked over, sitting beside him and leaning her head on his shoulder.

"What happened, Andrés?"

"Nothing. Everything is fine; don't worry about me."

"But I am worried! For fuck's sake, you're a fugitive."

"I know, and I'm sorry I involved you and your grandfather in this mess. But I came to the bakery because I knew you would help me."

Andrés looked at Alicia and smiled. "But hey, at least I got this." He handed her the jewelry, and as she took it in her hands, her eyes widened in disbelief. She was holding ancient Egyptian jewelry made of actual gold. A huge smile spread across her face, but she quickly gave it back to him. Andrés took it and placed it back in his bag.

Alicia and Andrés locked eyes, and she gently touched his face. As she leaned in closer, Andrés stopped her, leaving her looking confused. He gazed at her, tears welling in his eyes.

"I'm sorry..."

"What?"

"I can't risk it."

Andrés got up, picked up his bag, and opened the front door of Alicia's apartment building.

"Risk what? Andrés, what do you mean?"

Andrés looked at Alicia, tears streaming down his face.

"With the life I have, I can't risk it. I don't want to involve you in all the crazy shit I'm getting myself into." He paused. "If you ever get hurt because of me, I would never forgive myself."

"What do you mean? I—Andrés, you can't live alone."

Andrés managed a smile through his tears, and Alicia began to cry.

"Don't worry; I'm not alone."

He left the apartment and closed the door behind him.

A few days later, Andrés arrived in Guadalupe. Before leaving the country, he wanted to show Sergio the jewelry. He was excited to see his brother's reaction to the treasure he had stolen, but that fantasy was abruptly interrupted when he noticed that the front door was broken.
