Kageyama Kumiko yawned deeply, stretching her arms up into the sky as she did it. The late afternoon sun was just dawning and its foggy atmosphere caused Kumiko to feel sleepy. It had been a long day at school, Date Tech High, and she was ready to go to sleep the minute she got home, ignoring the fact that she had assignments piling up by the minute.
Her boyfriend, Kenji-kun hadn't been at school that day, making everything more boring than usual. Kumiko had tried calling him in the afternoon when it was lunchtime, but it had seemed so busy and messy on the other end, with Kenji even swearing, that Kumiko had decided to end the call. He'd said that he was going to his aunty's house but it had certainly not looked like it, but she didn't want to ask him about it yet.
Her home was in sight when a text message pinged through her phone, and Kumiko wondered if she really had the energy to look at her phone at all. But in the end, she took it out of her bag and tapped into the message. It was Chika, her friend from school. Chika was currently obsessed with the tall, broody high school boy; Aone and so far, Kumiko had gotten nearly forty texts concerning Aone from Chika.
Kumiko rolled her eyes but they widened when she realised that the text, was indeed, not about Aone.
CHIKA: Kumi-chan!!! THERE'S BIG NEWS!!! WAIT- I'LL TELL YOU LATER
Kumiko blinked but soon forgot about the text when a dog came sniffing up her legs. She giggled, bending down to pat the canine. Its fur was soft but knotted, as if it was homeless. Kumiko looked up, expecting to find someone who would come looking for the dog, but no one came. Sighing, she picked the dog and headed home. Kumiko could bring it to the adoption centre the next morning if no one turned up sooner or later.
But then another thought occurred to her; since her phone was already open, she might as well check in with her boyfriend right now.
KUMIKO: Kenji-kun~! Where were you today? You seemed really busy this afternoon. Are you okay? What was happening? I mean, it seemed pretty serious, you even had sunglasses on.
His answer came immediately.
KENJI: Oh hi, Kumi-chan! Sorry about earlier. I was busy with some of my mates down at Onigashi town. I was pretty busy with my aunty before lunch but then went to hang with my mates later on. Sorry about missing school and not really paying attention to you...! I'll call you tonight maybe? After eleven though.
FUMIKO: Alright, no worries. I was just worried but it's all good. I'll call you at eleven thirty then. See you <3
Her bag was thrown to the side as she rushed to the bathroom, eager to get a hot bath before all the hot water in the suburb ran out. It happened from time to time. But before she entered the bathroom, her eyes flickered to a picture frame on the shelf of her bedroom.
The picture was old and the glass was slightly dusty, the frame yellowish and splintered. Kumiko was young in the photo, maybe seven or eight. The sight of the picture set her heart beating with agony. It had been taken so long ago, when her family had been whole. But now, it was just her and her father.
"Tobio..." she whispered, but darted into the bathroom, refusing to cry. It would be no use. After all those nights she'd spent crying alone in her bedroom, begging for it all to be a dream, nothing had changed. Nothing would ever change and she would never see her brother again. It was useless to cry.
^v^
Nearly an hour later, after soaking in her hot bath, slowly drying herself and her hair, blowing her hair dry, pondering whether or not it was a good time to perm her hair or not, Kumiko finally got out of the bathroom, pulled away her towel and dressed herself.
