Niamh was shivering and her teeth were chattering. She continued to cough up water. Jenny knelt behind her and rubbed her hand up and down her arm reassuringly. She whispered soothing words which were for her just as much as they were for Niamh. Niall’s fingers were interlocked in Niamh’s.  An ambulance pulled up and a tall, dark haired paramedic climbed out and made his was over to them, while his partner grabbed the stretcher from the back of the ambulance. He knelt down in front of Niamh and Niall filled him in on what happened.

“Hey sweetheart, I’m Jason, Can you tell me your name?” His deep voice was soothing.

“N-n-n-iamh” she stuttered through her chattering teeth.

“I’m going to place an oxygen mask over your mouth to hell you breathe” he told her as his partner arrived and place it next to him. He placed it over her mouth.

“Can you tell me the last thing you remember?” her questioned,

“Someone was singing” her voice was muffled by the oxygen mask.

“You mean the boys at the concert?” He sounded very concerned.

“No, when I was in the water” she replied

Jason shot me a concerned look and Jenny lightly shook my head to tell him nobody was singing.

“Ok, sweetheart I’m going to listen to your chest and then were going to put you on the stretcher and take you to the hospital”

They lifted her onto the stretcher and wheeled it towards the ambulance. Jenny held Niamh’s hand tightly.

“Can I come in the ambulance”, she asked hopefully.

“Of course” He replied.

As Jenny climbed into the ambulance, Niamh reached up to pull away her oxygen mask. Jason stopped her.

“My Car” she whispered.

“It’s ok, I’ll come back for it” Jenny replied trying to calm her down.

“I’ll get it” Niall answered from the door of the ambulance and Jenny tossed him the keys.

The ride to the hospital was fast. They were met by doctors and Nurses as they climbed out of the ambulance. “18 years old, near drowning, resuscitated on scene…” Jason filled the doctors in. A Nurse stopped Jenny as Niamh was pushed through to the exam room. “You can wait over there” the polite nurse indicated to the small waiting area. Jenny walked over and sat down in an empty chair. She bounced her knees worriedly. She couldn’t sit still and stood up and started pacing. She nervously glanced at her watch over and over and over again. It had been about 10 minutes since they arrived but to Jenny it felt like hours.

Niall walked through the entrance of the emergency room. The first thing he noticed was worried Jenny pacing the waiting room. He walked up to her. “Any News?” he questioned already knowing there wasn’t from Jenny’s pacing. Jenny shook her head and continued to pace. “Here, relax” he said as he guided her towards an empty seat. She had only sat down when the doctor came out. She stood up and walked over to him.

“Niamh was very lucky. There is no fluid on her lungs which was our major concern but we’d still like to keep her overnight for observation” he reassured them.

“Can I see her?” Jenny questioned hopefully

“She’s getting settled in her room, a nurse will come and get you in minute” he looked at Niall “There are showers at the end of the hall and I’m sure a Nurse will find you something to wear” he turned around and disappeared through the doors. Jenny turned around and grabbed Niall into a tight embrace, he was still wet from his dip in the water but she didn’t care. She stepped back “Thank you, you saved her life, she’s my best-friend thank you” she pulled him into another hug. “Anytime” he whispered in her ear. She released him and watched as he walked over to a Nurse. She guided him down the hall. She wiped the tears that had formed in her eyes away. She didn't know what she would do if Niamh died.
