Chapter 17: Faces of Conflict

- A while of explaining everything later... -

Pomu and the others took a while to explain everything to Elira and Selen in detail. From where it all started to their search of answers, they explained it all, not noticing the time that they have expended. Unsurprisingly, the two are understandably shocked at their revelation.

"W-What?" Selen exclaimed in utter shock after hearing from Pomu their side of the story. "So wait... Éleanor was responsible for the assassination attempt of King Garte?" She questioned.

"He's our most suspicious individual, no doubt." (Falric) replied to her.

"He was in the Peace Festival as the envoy for the Western Valleys. I'm sure you guys know that." Lize said the two.

"Yes, we heard of Éleanor taking with him some of his advisors there." Elira confirms. "This is all so weird..."

"Hold on. How do we know that you're all telling the truth?" Selen questioned them. "Éleanor approached us and asked for our help in stabilizing the Kingdom of Cheliot after the king and the queen were assassinated. He has done exactly that so far, so what is the basis of your accusations?" She questions further.

"That's what we're trying to find out. We need to find Prince Mithze and ask him about everything." Lize replied to her. Selen frowned.

"We're under orders to kill him because he's a traitor to the Cheliot people. You're not getting in our way." Selen threatened.

"Let me ask you this, Selen: has Éleanor ever told you about his reason as to why he wants Prince Mithze dead?" Pomu questioned Selen who opened her mouth to speak, but found it unable to say anything in reply. "Of course he wouldn't tell you. I'm willing to bet my status as a forest fairy that Éleanor wants Mithze dead so that the truth cannot be found out." She said.

"What you said is true, but still..." Elira muttered while Selen stayed silent.

"But what? What are his justifications for somehow managing to take the Cheliot throne for himself when he's just a nobody? Why does he want a member of the Cheliot royal family dead even though he's the last in the line of succession?" Pomu asked them.

"He asked you two for your help because he knows that you two will answer his call regardless. He's taking advantage of your honor." (Falric) said to the two and Pomu nodded.

"Exactly! And not once did you two question him about all of the things he's done?" Pomu questioned. "Forget what he did in Cheliot. The better question is why is he here, in the Eastern Plateaus, with you two?"

Elira and Selen looked at each other. They look at each other for answers, but they know that neither of them have any.

"What do you make out of this?" Elira asked Selen.

"What do you think? I'm just as clueless as you are." Selen retorted to her. Elira just sighed before looking back at the group and noticing Marek again.

"By the way, Marek. It's been a while." Elira greeted Marek. "Sorry that I attacked you earlier. Didn't recognize you at first." She mused to him.

"It's alright. At least I didn't get any broken bones like last time." Marek remarked and Elira sweatdropped.

"Aha..."

"So Elira, Selen... Are you two under Éleanor's orders to assassinate Prince Mithze?" Pomu questioned the two, remembering about their original mission.

"W-Well, yes and no. We were under the impression that Mitze is seeking to weaken Cheliot by making the other kingdoms invade so that he could find whoever killed his parents. An act of vengeance, I guess..." Selen replied. "After Éleanor took over the throne, Mithze fled the kingdom with his loyal companions and Éleanor used it as proof of his guilt." She added.
