C H A P T E R 1
Contrary to popular belief, being a Guardian Angel sucked.
It's not that it's a boring job, or that you don't like what you do – because you do, you love it. Honestly speaking, you couldn't see yourself being anything other than a Guardian Angel. And with your experience and years of existence, you saw your fair share of jobs available. What sucked, however, was that you grew attached to your humans – you hated the word the Messengers used, assignments, they called them –, you would be there for their first breath, first words, achievements and hardships, you would basically see them grow and be the better version of themselves, only to see them die (sometimes in horrible ways) and not being able to do anything about it.
Of course, now it's easier to deal with the pain that came with having to say goodbye to one of your dear humans, but it never goes away. And to be honest, you don't want to, for that would mean you had forgotten about them – their stories.
Granted It could understand the strain these situations could have on Its Guardian Angels and Grim Reapers' mental health, so after each cycle It would grant Its creations a few years off, so that they could relax and get mentally ready for a new cycle.
That's where you're right now – on your three-year vacations, with Tae, your partner and best friend. Both of you have been granted this opportunity after leading your last human, Riku Tanaka, to her afterlife after her beautiful 65 years of life, in which she married her childhood friend and gave birth to two identical twins, managed to start a flower business of her own and helped a stray dog by welcoming him into her home.
A true gem she was.
It was rare to be sided with humans with such fulfilling lives. More often than not, before reaching a stage in life where humans could finally rest and worry about nothing, they would have to face all kind of challenges and, sometimes, deal with all kinds of injustices the world threw at them. Riku, however, managed to have a calm and unproblematic life from the moment she was born. Even when she was faced with adversities, she would deal with them with a smile on her face and come out as the winner.
Just as you were about to remember the name of the street where Riku's flower shop was, your train of thoughts were interrupted by a sigh coming from your companion.
"Everything good over there, Tae?".
Stretching like a cat, Tae got up from the beach chair she was occupying and pushed her long red strands of hair out of her face "I just... Am having this weird feeling, you know? That something bad is about to happen".
"We're on an isolated beach and haven't had to deal with annoying co-workers for about three years, I think that the only bad thing that can happen here Tae, is one of us getting a sunburn".
"No, no, babe, I'm getting all kinds of heebie-jeebies, and you know what happens when I have them".
At that, you looked at her wide-eyed and were just about to answer when something behind her catches your attention, as well as your good mood.
"Thought I would find you here, and as always, I was right" a familiar pesky voice said, making Tae roll her eyes and look behind her, so she was face to face with the stuck-up Messenger.
But then again, when are they not?
"But If I'm being honest, one does not need to think too much, after all, you simpletons always choose the same spot, how uncreative and predictable." The voice continues.
"What do you mean Chi~" Tae begins with an innocent tone to her voice "We're just making your life easier, we know how much you overwork yourself, so it's only natural that we don't want you to lose your last brain cell looking for us".
"My name is Chikao, Reaper, at least say it right" The dark-haired male scoffs. "Then again, one cannot expect much from you lot".
Before Tae could answer and make this discussion take longer than it needed to, you decided to get up from your chair and face the duo.
"As lovely it is to see your face, Chikao" Making your way over, you stood next to Tae and linked both your pinkies, so that she could calm down "Why are you here? I thought we had six more months before being called to work again".
Sparing one more glace at Tae, Chikao turned to you with a scowl on his face and adjusted his glasses "Well, you thought wrong. Here is your new assignment".
"Stop calling them that..." Tae whispered, watching Chikao's depart as soon as he passed her the white envelope.
Once the Messenger's figure disappeared, Tae stuck out her tongue and grumbled under her breath, before giving you the envelope.
"Think we'll have another gem like Riku?" You asked her.
"Knowing our luck, we won't have another one like her for the rest of our service" She laughed before leaning on your back and looking over your shoulders "Now c'mon, open it!"
Smiling at her enthusiasm, you turned the white envelope and opened it.
Baji Keisuke, 3rd November 1990, Tokyo

Once the Messenger leaves, it only takes a few seconds for both girls to leave the tropical beach behind and with only one destination in mind – Tokyo General Hospital.
Hospitals have always been complicated places for the Angel, because, excluding the odd visit during her human's lifetime when they got hurt or were severely ill, there were two big moments that would lead her there. Either to welcome her new human, or to say goodbye forever, and both moments left her emotional.
Two different types of emotional, but emotional, nonetheless.
Luckily, this time she's here to welcome Baji Keisuke in the world, and for that she can't help neither the light skips in her steps, nor the smile on her face, as she and Tae make their way, unnoticed, through the hospital's hallways towards the maternity ward.
She can't help it, she really can't. After all, she gets to experience, once again, one of Earth's biggest miracles – birth. Admittedly, she could do without the screaming and the blood, but the smile she gets to see on the parents' faces as they see and hold their child for the first time makes her feel all warm and giddy inside.
It makes all worth it.
So lost in her thoughts, the Angel almost misses the room where her and Tae need to be, if not for the latter that gently takes hold of her hand and nudges her towards the closed door in front of them.
Room 310.
Once inside the room, both girls look at her surroundings and can't help but notice the extremely beautiful woman laid in the bed. She has short black hair and equally black eyes, and despite all the sweat covering her face, she has the brightest smile anyone could ever see on her face. Looking in the direction the woman is facing, the Angel and the Reaper see the woman's source of happiness. There, laid in her arms in a fluffy blanket is a small baby, and as both girls get closer, they can see little tufts of black hair coming out of his head and once he opens his eyes – his mother's eyes – they can only hope that this boy has a long and fulfilling life.
Moving her hand so that she can touch his forehead, and give him her protection, the Angel can't help but get misty eyed.
"Welcome, Keisuke".
