August 17 2014

I've lost a lot of people in this life. Each one is a different type of pain. The past few years I forgot what all that pain felt like. That was until I looked though the glass to see Fury surrounded by a bunch of doctors operating on his fresh wounds. They were calm yet completely frantic at the same time. I fiddled with my fingers nervously as I watched his pulse drop. Steve, Nat, and Maria stand next to me at a loss for words. His pulse got slower and slower as the doctors scrambled to do all they can.

The loud flatline alarm rings though my ears as his pulse disappears. Maria walks away quickly and Nat follows a moment after. I watch as they pull the sheet over his head, and set their tools down defeated. I stand there emotionless as Steve crosses his arms.

He turns to face me but I turn and walk off. Its not that I'm mad at him or anything, I just feel so guilty and empty that I can't even look at him. I walk into an empty room, lean my back against one of the walls and close my eyes taking as many deep breaths as I can. Fury and I haven't always gotten along, and we certainly yelled and nagged at each other, but he had become family. Maybe not family I could fully trust, but family I knew trusted me. Wether I'd like to admit it or not, Fury did a lot for me. He was such a huge part of my life that I knew one thing for sure.

He isn't dead.

He told me once several years ago, that in case things got too dangerous he could easily fake his death, and that there was only one way to know, via a secret code. If 'the clock is a minute ahead'. Once he said it I knew something was about to happen, I didn't know what. I sigh heavily not knowing what to do. I knew I could reach out to Maria, but I figured I better wait until things calm down to find Fury. In the meantime I have to figure out if I tell Steve or not.

Fury showed up at our apartment knowing the two of us were going to walk in, which means he trusts both of us. But I have to tell him when I know its safe.

After a few minutes I could hear Steve's footsteps enter the room but I keep my eyes closed. "I'm sorry about Fury."

"Don't be." I say with a sigh as I look up at him. "Go ahead and say what you really want to Steve."

He steps closer to me. "What are you not telling me? Where did you go last night?"

"She was with me." Nat says as she walks into the room causing me to open my eyes and turn towards her. "I just cant tell you why."

Steve crosses his arms. "Why not Romanof?"

She leans against the door frame and shakes her head. "That's the least of our problems right now. Someone killed Fury and that's what you're worried about?"

"My girlfriend leaves in the middle of the night and comes back with a split lip and a truck load of secrets- you're damn right that's what I'm worried about." He says losing his temper. "Now I'm going to politely ask you to leave so I can talk to her because I don't believe this conversation involves you."

She looks at him surprised before turning and walking out.

"Y/n..." He says walking towards where I'm standing. "I need you to tell me what's going on."

I lean myself against the wall behind me and run my hand though my hair. "I can't tell you everything. Not yet at least."

He takes a step closer to me only a few inches from me. "Can't or won't?" His angry demeanor is something I don't see often, and certainly something I don't know how to handle.
