The Embrace of Stars

Waking up early was one of Nova's favourite things. The last remnant of the vast night still loomed over the world and she could see the stars still. What did it matter if she was tired at school? If she had gotten to see her beloved lights in the sea of darkness and if she had gotten to study the constellations and if she had gotten to gaze fondly at the moon, it was all worth it to her.

Then again, she did not enjoy feeling tired. The nagging exhaustion that pulled on her eyelids was always a bother during the day but she'd learnt to deal with it. After all, she had to be present at school; she'd miss her favourite lesson if she wasn't there.

Physics was always her favourite. She wasn't exactly fond of the equations and she didn't exactly see why learning Hooke's law was necessary but the space topics made it worth it.

As soon as her teacher walked into the class with a bright 'good morning', Nova always smiled. Not necessarily in the politeness of greeting her teacher, more in greeting of her growing interest. Those one hour periods sat next to the window and intently staring at the notes on the life cycle of a star the teacher would write on the board were the only reason Nova managed to leave her spot on the roof of her house every morning. She could leave the comfort of the stars embrace in the early morning because she'd get to learn about them during the day. And when the sun had set and the moon was high in the sky? She would get to see her stars again.

The rest of the school day, however, was not so fun for Nova. There were only so many lessons she could take. Walking into the classrooms of maths or English or history was basically like signing a contract of 'I'm here because I am legally required to be but I am not going to pay attention to a word you say.' The frequent doodles on her hands could account for that.

During one of these periods of contracts, Nova sighed in exasperation and picked up her purple pen. While the rest of the class learnt about how the character of Scrooge showed the theme of social responsibility in A Christmas Carol, Nova sat at the back, putting ink to her wrist to display the same small galaxy of stars she always seemed to bear. The purple curved into circles and swirls and soon enough, a galaxy was present on her skin.

It was beautiful to her. Maybe not to the best artist in the world but why did that matter? It made her happy and that's what was important.

"Nova, I hope you're writing down the quotes on the board and not doodling again." The teacher's voice brought Nova back into the world of school and she turned a faint red. Uttering out a small apology and nodding her head quickly, she began to write down the list of quotes on the board.

And yet, she became aware of ink forming on her skin again. And this time, it wasn't by her hand.
