A soulmate just for her

Nova couldn’t sleep that night. Well, she rarely slept most nights but that wasn’t the point. Normally, she chose not to sleep in favour of star-gazing. But this particular night was different. Instead of gazing upwards, she was constantly glancing at her hand. At the messily scrawled note, which she had been trying to read ever since 4th period Literature. How could one person’s handwriting ever be so messy? She couldn’t even begin to decipher the coded message on her hand.

The night stretched on and Nova still couldn’t sleep. Sighing in annoyance, she climbed onto her roof with a blanket. It was going to be a long night so she might as well be prepared. Gazing fondly upwards, Nova asked, “Is this my soulmate?” It might have just been her imagination, but the stars seemed to twinkle a bit brighter in response. Almost as if they were winking at her.

Despite her immediate ground-breaking realisation that she was actually destined for love and the terrifying thought that she would fall in love with one particular person that was out of her design, she smiled. A small smile, but genuine. Pure. As if this news was something she never expected but would not change the world for.

She’d never believed in soulmates. The idea had always seemed ludicrous, but a part of her wondered whether the stars just wanted to make people happy. Maybe this was the stars’ way of showing their appreciation back to Nova; by giving her someone who would love her.

After a couple of minutes of star-gazing, she glanced back at the messily scribbled note. Under the bright moonlight, she could still make out the way the e’s curved and the way the t’s were crossed. Her soulmate was clearly not a neat person. It’s not like she could say anything, her writing wasn’t exactly pretty either. But the thought that someone else had the same flaw as her made her giggle. Besides, there was a saying. “The smart people tend to have messy handwriting because their hands can’t keep up with the thoughts in their head.” Maybe her soulmate was a genius in disguise. Who knows?

Wrapping her blanket tighter around her, Nova smiled and closed her eyes contently. That night may have been spent cold atop her roof but her heart was warm. For she had discovered her fate in life. A soulmate had been created just for her. And that made her happier than she cared to admit.
