Peter:
So we all sit huddle together in the tent we brought going over the plan.. 24 hours before we hit Hook's lair.
"I think our best bet is to catch him off guard." Patrick muses.
"But he knows I'm back by now, surely? So he'll know I'm going to come for the crown." I counter. He frowns and shrugs like he is saying, "Okay then, what do I know?"
I give him a small smile but he looks the other way.
"He still won't know when you're coming." Miles says but he's looking at Patrick, as a show of support.
"As I see it, we have two options. Go so big it won't matter if he sees us or sneak in the back and try to get in and out unnoticed." Artemis says, climbing out of Miles' pocket and planting a little kiss on his cheek. Miles blushes and kisses his head. The rest of us coo and call them cute.
Patrick clears his throat.
"What if the stealth plan was Plan A and the go big or go home plan was Plan B?" He ponders, his green eyes twinkling despite the almost complete darkness of the tent. I chuckle and he looks at me like I'm about to shut him down again.
"I like that you have them names!" I say raising my hands in mock defence and Patrick smiles all shy and sheepish.. and damn it, it's cute as hell. "I support the plan." I say. Miles and Artemis agree before slipping behind their divider curtain, they giggle a lot after that. Haha good for them.Little Addy just collapses in my arms and falls asleep. I run my fingers through his blonde hair as I debate getting up and moving to my bed.
"Thank you for your support on my plan." Patrick whispers for Addy's benefit. I give him a smile.
"It's smart." I tell him. He raises his eyebrows at me.
"You just needed it to have a go big or go home back up plan to see it." He sighs.
"It's not personal, Patty. That's who I am, when it comes to plans, it's go big or go home." I try to lighten up the mood a little.
But he just frowns.
"It's reckless, you'll get killed one day." Patrick huffs.
"Ace used to tell me the same thing, that's what a lot of our early fights were about but.." I should not finish that sentence. What was I thinking? Patrick is close to tears.
"But he was able to accept you for who you were, I get it Peter. I'll never measure up." He sniffles and disappears behind his own divider before I can say anything else. I'm a monster. I lay Addy on one of the beds and cover him with a blanket, we have two floor mattresses, you know the fold out ones. And then I set up my own, I let myself have a quiet cry while I do so, hoping that no one hears me. I'm so lost as I lay down on that mattress.
"Peter, what's wrong?" I woke Addy.. I am a monster.
"Sorry I woke you Ads, I'm alright." I try to tell him but he comes over and sits on the end of my bed, staring me down. But it's sort of funny when a five year old tries to stare you down. So I smile.
"You're not off the hook, Peter. I may be young but you can still talk to me." He says. I know I'm not getting out of this, Addy is persistent. It's the age.
"I feel so lost Ads, I don't know if I'm going to be enough to save Ace. I still don't know how I feel about him or Patrick and there is still a lot I don't remember about my past. I guess it all gets a bit overwhelming." I say. Addy nods slowly and wipes my eyes with his little fingers.
"Peter, you'll always be enough." He says. And maybe that's all I needed from my little shadow tonight. I give him a hug.
"Thanks Addy." I say as I watch him crawl back into his own bed.
He tells me I'm welcome but I can't ignore the little sniffles that start up a few minutes later.
"Get back over here." Is all I have to say before the poor kid is crying in my arms.
"Avery would be so proud of you." I tell him. "You're the strongest kid I've ever met."
"I just miss him so much, Peter." He sniffs.
"I know Addy, I wish there was more I could do." I tell him. This gets a little scoff.
"Peter, you're doing more than enough."
And that's the last thing he says before he falls asleep. I cry myself to sleep too.
Maybe tomorrow will be better?
