That memory was so strong through Peter that I saw it too. I don't know how but I did.
Artemis says that sometimes when someone has been away from Never-land for a long time starts remembering, some memories get shared with everyone that needs to see it.
"Their first "I love yous" that's a clear enough sign to me that I cannot compete with Ace. It can only mean that for those two.. it will always be each other." I sniff and turn away from Artemis and Miles.
"That is one possibility but it also could be that Ace and Peter's love was real and that although Ace will always be an important part in Peter's life. All you have to do is accept that, because Peter really likes you. Like maybe it's trying to tell you that it WAS real.. I don't know that's just what it made me think when you told me about it." In true Miles fashion he says something so wise and thoughtful and then immediately retreats back into the youthful uncertainty he can't seem to outrun. But that's where Artemis comes in and re affirms what he says. And the confidence in Miles returns, only slightly, but it's there.
"Okay let's go with Miles' version, I like that one better." I laugh as I take in Artemis' words about fresh starts.
When we first met Artemis and found out what he had been to Miles. I guess I was shallow and didn't get it. Maybe they can't hold hands, kiss or do anything else physical in a traditional sense but their relationship isn't about that, even if they find other ways to comfort and touch each other, it's clear that their relationship is emotional, so much more about being there for each other emotionally than physically. They are just so beautiful to see together.
And they inspire something in me.
"Peter?" I call out to him. He turns slowly with a small smile, with little Addy who is now awake, still on his back.
"Yeah?" He says stopping to let Addy down. He whimpers still half asleep but settles when Miles picks him up.
"Whatever comes of the two of us, I will never disrespect your relationship with Ace, and I understand that he will probably always be an important part in your life. That's what this shared memory means right? So I want you to know I'll give you that, no matter what." I declare more boldly than I feel.
Peter just stands there for a moment, his light brown eyes looking back and forth between me and the forest floor and His strawberry blonde curls moving with the wind. Even in indecision he's beautiful.
Suddenly he breaks into a sprint and tackles me with a hug.
"Maybe that is what it means? we still don't know but you can't know how much it means to me to hear that."
He kisses my cheek and squeezes my shoulders before we all keep moving forward.
Addy barely takes a breath before he's back at Peter's side.
"You okay to walk, Addy?" I hear him as sweetly.
"Yes Peter." Addy says just as sweetly. It's then that I realise Peter needs little Addy just as much as Addy needs him.
Having someone at his side telling him he's safe to be around, grounds an otherwise very confused Peter who is trying to find his way back to who he was here. Addy is a reminder to Peter that he is good. I can see that in the way Peter's pride shines through whenever Addy is by his side.
He may be lost, but he's never alone.
