Chapter One
I sat up, only to gasp as pain blossomed in my side. I put my hand where the pain was and peeled back the clothing, only to wince at the gaping wound in my side, letting red, sticky blood pour onto my allready shaking hands. Great. I fumbled around on my belt until I felt the familiar neck of a glass bottle, dragging it infront of me. My sisters emergancy potion. Well i guess this counted as an emergancy, so I dragged to cork out with my teeth before gagging at the stench. It was like rotton fish and eggs mixed in one, which always makes me question what she actually puts in the stuff. I downed half the bottle in one go and splashed the rest on the wound, picking myself up off the ground as the tingling sensation started in my side. Thank god it wasn't one that itched, or i'd be irratable for the rest of the day. I surveyed what was around me, and it was not good. There was about twenty mages scattered around where I woke, all dead in a pool of blood, some even burned to a crisp. Had I done that? I don't remember, but.... Crap. What have I gotten myself into? Taking my eyes off the corpses was hard, but when I finally did, I was met by an even stranger sight. Snow was crashing down the mountain side into a village, which was surrounded by an army of what looked like mages, but I couldn't know for sure, as a second later they were burried in the snow. What had happened here? And what did I have to do with it?
I turned round and spotted a figure trecking through the snow, their hand glowing a strange green as they went.
"Hey! Wait!" I cried, as my voice was lost in the wind. Flakes of snow joined the gale, until it had formed into a howling snow storm. I pulled my cloak close around my body as I pressed foreward after the figure, half squinting as the snow stung my cheeks like a whip. My hair was trailing behind me and was becoming white from the snow. My body wasn't too cold though, my inner heat stopped that, but it didn't stop my hands and feet from feeling like they had frozen into blocks of ice. It had to be a snow storm didn't it?
I carried on following the figure until lights showed a bit ahead of them, and they collapsed into the snow. They were picked up and hauled away with shouts of "Inquisitor" following them. I held back a little so they didn't see me, I didn't know if they were hostile, before following them quietly. The storm was starting to die down now, and I was grateful, I didn't think my poor hands and feet could cope with another battering from the cold. Dark had now settled around me, and with it, the lonely howling of the wolves of the mountains. I wanted to join in, but stopped myself as I realised that I would lose the light of the soldiers infront of me. A pile of snow fell infront of me from an outcrop above, obscuring my line of vision. I cursed under my breath as I trudged around it. I didn't have the energy to climb over it; but when I got round, to my horror, the torches were gone, and so were the people. I was lost in the darkness. Alone.
Great.
I crawled under the outcrop and collapsed onto the rock, before panting heavily on the ground. I'm so cold, I never though it was possible that I could die like this. I should just lay here and let death take me in my sleep. It would be so much easier...
No. I hadn't escaped my mother just to die on a bit of rock on a mountain. I will live. Spurred by my surprisingly motivational thoughtsl, I hauled myself to my feet and trudged on in the snow, praying to the maker that I would find somebody. Anybody who would help.
After what felt like hours, my whole body was numb with cold, untill I thought I heard singing. No, I must be wrong. Out here? I must be going crazy. No, wait. I can hear it again.. It was floating on the wind, filling my heart with hope as I ran as fast as I could towards the voices.
'Shadows fall and hope has fled
Steel your heart, the dawn will come
The night is long and the path is dark
Look to the sky for one day soon
The dawn will come'I was getting closer now. The voices were louder now.
'The Shepherd's lost and his home is far
Keep to the stars, the dawn will come
The night is long and the path is dark
Look to the sky for one day soon
The dawn will come'I could see the camp now, the lights were blurry in my vision, but I could faintly make out the silhouettes of people stood round the middle of q camp. It was them who were singing, the tune loud and proud in my ears
'Bare your blade and raise it high
Stand your ground, the dawn will come
The night is long and the path is dark
Look to the sky for one day soon
The dawn will come'I was entering the camp, as a few people noticed me and tugged on each others sleeves at the end of the song. It was then all my energy fled from the body, as I collapsed into the warm snow, my vision instantly going black.
