Ryder sat next to Donnovan, reveling in the relaxation that came in knowing that she could take a break from wedding planning. She rested her head on his shoulder. “You know, no matter how horrible the ordeal was, good did come out of it.” She mumbled.

He glanced down at her. “How so?”

“Well, minus Kane’s death, it pushed us closer to each other. I never would’ve been able to tell you I still liked you if Alyx hadn’t set us up.”

“Alyx set us up?”

“Yeah… Before he got jealous.” Ryder blushed, remembering the passionate kiss he’d given her when they’d fought.

“He was jealous?” Donnovan stared at her, eyes wide.

“Yes… Yes, he was.” Ryder laughed softly. “Man, was he ever jealous. That’s why he targeted you every chance he got. He knew you loved me and I loved you back.”

Donnovan sighed. “Well then… The strange ways that life has…”

She leaned up to kiss him. “It worked out in the end… Despite losing Kane.”

“Yes, it did. I’ll always be grateful for his sacrifice, because it means that I can spend the rest of my life with you.” Donnovan whispered, stroking her face.

“Do you want cheesecake or a vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting?” Her mother’s voice cut in.

Ryder groaned. “And we’re being summoned again.” She griped.

“Wedding planning is so complicated. Good thing that you’re the one who has to do the planning.” Donnovan grinned.

“Oh, no, no, no…” Ryder gave him a wicked smile. “If I have to suffer, so do you. Come on. We’re back to cake tasting. Until you pick one, we’ll keep doing so. It’s not over for either of us until the moment we finally wed. So you’ll have to deal with it.” Cheekily, she tugged him towards the table where her mother sat. “Consider it practice. After all, you’ll have to deal with me the rest of your life, love.”

He laughed. “When you put it that way, cake tasting doesn’t seem so bad. In lieu of the fact that we have the rest of our lives ahead, that is.”

“Beautiful conclusion, huh?” Ryder mused.

“That it is.” He kissed the side of her head as they started tasting more cakes. “That it is…” He murmured again.
