Ryder woke up the next morning, and he was in control. Why can’t you let me be in control more often? She whined at him. It’s my body.
Because I’m possessing you, not visiting. Now, how about we have a chat about you?
I don’t want to talk about me. Ryder snapped.
Too bad. I want to…
Then I’m done talking to you.
Eventually, you’re going to have to talk to me, and when you do, we’ll have this chat.
Ryder huffed. Annoying airhead.
He didn’t respond to her jibe, and so she sat back and watched while Alyx did as he pleased in her body. Seems like you’ve got a good handle on this now, buddy… She grumbled.
Alyx smirked. Yeah, but this is extremely tiring.
You signed up for that when you possessed me, you arrogant jerk.
He didn’t respond, and she assumed that she’d annoyed him. Honestly, arguing with him was better than the silence she was now subjected to, but she couldn’t help lashing out. He still hadn’t said why he was here or what he wanted. That scared her.
I’m not sure you’re ready to know why I’m here… Alyx answered her.
Why not? I want to know.
I’m just… I’m not certain yet. I’m waiting until I am. Alyx murmured.
I’m ready now. Ryder objected.
No… You aren’t.
What do I need to do in order to be ready? Ryder asked, wishing he’d just tell her.
There is nothing you can do. You just have to wait until certain things happen. Alyx sighed. In a little while, we should discover whether or not we can return to East Base.
Why do you want to go there?
So full of questions, aren’t you? Alyx laughed. As much as I love to find an inquisitive mind, I must disappoint you. I won’t be answering any of those questions for a while.
Alyx, just answer this… Why did you take me and not Kane?
Kane was not… Suitable. The spell I formed was to scan and hold each of the people who walked over the threshold. A second spell alerted me of who was most suitable for my use. You happened to be that person. Alyx cleared his throat. I didn’t exactly know you, so I didn’t have a personal vendetta against you, if that’s what you’re wondering.
Didn’t? But you do now?
I never said that. Alyx snapped.
You implied it. Why do you hate me? Ryder reached out across the darkness in her mind, trying to touch the consciousness of the man possessing her right now. What did I do?
He sighed. I’m sorry… I’m not trying to be harsh with you, Ryder. I don’t hate you… It’s just… You happened to born into the wrong bloodline. That’s all.
So this reason for your presence here… It has to do with some sort of blood feud? Ryder struggled to connect the dots. Why wouldn’t he just tell her everything? What wasn’t she ready for? She understood that he was possessing her, so that meant he wouldn’t want to tell her his plans until he was sure she was under his control. Perhaps that was all he was waiting for.
