As a kid, everyone hears stories of dragons, fairies, and other mythical creatures.
Dragons, with impenetrable scales, and devastating fire breath, who raid villages, destroy homes, and steal gold ( mostly just anything shiny) and pretty princesses.
Witches who sell overpriced magic potions, that were supposed to heal you, but turn you into wild animals.
And other mythical creatures, that were up to no good. Always causing fights and wars.
