Once upon a time there was a young girl called Ava, at the age of 17 she found her world turned upside down by four boys, as she suffered through what should have been the worst thing that had ever happened to her but in the end she found what she considered the best thing that had ever happened to her Love. But the love Ava found was not normal love, it wasn't the happy ending type that's wrapped in love hearts and boxes of chocolates, it was dark and it was painful. This was because their love was never meant to be, their fairy tale was not written in the stars. Their paths were now parallel lines, headed down the same lonely road, destined to never meet again.
Ava became extremely depressed, her mother was so worried. She didn't recognise her anymore, the girl she home wasn't her daughter anymore.
She took Ava to see many doctors. After many different failed round of therapy to try break her out of what they called "Stockholm Syndrome". Ava spent over 4 months on a mental health ward. She felt like she existed past her expiry date. Her youth was over, her light had faded and there was nothing left for her ahead.
She couldn't explain why, or how she had gone from feeling nothing but hate and resentment towards the boys to understand and love but she had and a bunch of men in white coats couldn't invalidate her feelings. She quickly realised that no one around her would ever understand it, especially if she herself couldn't.
After a long and painful trial Ashton, Calum and Michael all found themselves in prison with lengthy sentences, convicted on a wide array of charges. They knew they deserved their time in prison as what they did was awful, and as much as they had tried to convince themselves they regretted what they did, deep down they knew they didn't. They had all meet the girls they love more than anything in the world.
They did not regret finding their soul mates.
The trial was a huge hit with the media, news agents and magazine company's would come from all over the world to get the latest gossip on the trail. Each week there would be new rumours of crazy things like pregnancies, children and secret cults. Of course non of it was true but as it was in the news people just believed it.
Even people closest to Ava started to believe the news over her, her story wasn't as exciting as the one created by the media.
Beth and Lucy both played a large roll in the trail. The girls had made deals for their identities to be protected if they testified against the boys. Ava had refused to help put the boys away but her interviews with the police were used against them in the trail.
Ava never saw either Beth or Lucy again, her therapist thought it would be unproductive for Ava. She was told it was best to recover separately and not blur the lines between what she called their bubble and the outside world.
Ava didn't ever try to reach out, she had heard the girls statements during the trail and understood why they had done what they did. She truly loved the girls still but couldn't forgive them for what they had done.
As much as Ava tries to hide from the media, she quickly became the poster girl for the tragedy, being seen as the last girl standing. People would constantly find new ways to exploit her and her story. All the story's published would never be fully true, her words would be twisted to fit the newest exciting narrative created.
One day she received an email from a book company, they wanted to write a book about what happened to her. She realize this could be her way to make people see the truth and correct all the lies that had been told. She wrote back to the company telling them she would love to write a book as long as her truth could be told.
Ava thought of her book as a way of trying to rebuild her life, writing down all her happy memories made her feel happy for a while but it's was only a short fix, the happiness she felt wasn't real, it never lasted.
She told the boys shared life story and the stories of the girls that came before her. Of the girls taken in and cared for by the boys. How the house came to feel like a home and the people inside became family even if it had been a violent and scary beginning. The book became something positive to put her energy towards. Even her doctors agreed it was a good outlet.
Meanwhile Ashton, Michael and Calum all sat in prison miserable and hated by the world. They spent a while all in the same prison throughout the trail. Which was good for them as they could support each other but as time went on one by one they were all sent off to different prisons. The only thing they had truly ever had was each other and that had been taken away from them.
No one understood why they were hurting too. People thought it was because they had been found out and that their power taken away but that wasn't true. They missed the girls they loved, the brother they lost and the family they had once shared. They weren't the monsters people thought they were. They never meant for anyone to get hurt or for it to spiral out of control like it had but it did. They had to pay the consequences, so they excepted their fates and gave into their new lonely lives, knowing the only people they had to blame was themselves.
Ava finished writing her book and copy's of 'Ava's story' were put into every book store. She thought she would changed people's minds about the boys but she just changed there minds about her. People saw her being sympathetic towards men who took abducted and locked away young girls, and who caused the deaths. She was judged and hated for sympathising with them, although she had been a victim herself.
After being misunderstood for so long, Ava's mind and delicate soul became corrupted once again. There had been so many people telling her how she shoud think and feel for so long, she started to listen. Slowly she became a less herself and a little more like the victim people thought she should be. Her memories of her time in the house didn't feel like her own, she could no longer tell the truth from all the lies.
She had been in therapy for so long. She felt as if she unlearning and relearning her story so many times she wasn't sure of the facts anymore. Made to believe she was an unreliable narrator. As if her experiences weren't fact but simply the version of events her mind had concocted to help her survive. Maybe that was true but it didn't matter now.
Years later she reread the book she had spent so long writing and felt as if it was written about someone else. She didn't even recognize the person she had written about. She could hardly remember anything that had happened over the last few years. Her happy memories had faded and all that was left was the pain of the aftermath.
No one that went into that house came out without leaving parts of them behind, as if they had all existed wearing masks they couldn't take off. There was no enjoyment to life but they had, had to relearned how to survive and keep going. They had no dreams left or goals to achieves they were all just stuck surviving in a world that didn't understand them.
Out of the three boys Ashton was the first to pass away, he died from heart failure exactly 30 years from the day when his only love was brutally taken away from him. When he died he was already practically forgotten about, to everyone around him he was just another disposable number. His ashes were buried in the prison cemetery with no head stone or ceremony, just left as a body in the ground. No one ever visited where is body was left to lay.
Ava died many years later from cancer, it has started in her liver and slowly spread through her body. Since the start she refused all treatment as she didn't want to try prolong her life. Only 5 months after being diagnosed Ava took her last breathe aged 56. She lay smiling thinking only of the man she loved, knowing her time was finally over. She welcomed death after spending her life in her own kind of prison, never fully living.
As death kissed her on the lips, she used the last of her strength she whispered "I still love you Ashton" before closing her eyes and letting her soul be taken away. Finally feeling at peace.
