The Darkest Time (Sequel to Love is War)

Prologue

It's nighttime on Berk.

Everyone is sleeping, forgetting all their worries.

Berk has been through tough times but not all of the Berkians (A/N: Did I spell that right?)had it as bad as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the lll.

His past wasn't easy. Nobody ever said it was. But after the battle with the alpha and Drago, he would love to say that things are finally on the brighter side for him and his people.

Despite the lose of his dad, he has found his mother and is making an effort to be there for him. Hiccup loves that she is here now, but wishes she wouldn't try so hard to make up all those years. But he wouldn't have it any other way.

And another thing. He finally has a girlfriend. Yes, Hiccup has a girlfriend. Snotlout and Fishlegs have been flirting with Ruffnut ever since, well, four years ago when they realized that Astrid cares for Hiccup and is making a big effort for him to listen to her. When he finally did, well, that's when his mom comes in but it's a long story.

The dragons had gotten a new alpha. After Drago and the former alpha left, Toothless became the alpha around the same time Hiccup became chief.

A lot happened that day. But, would Hiccup could go back and change it? Maybe to get his father back but he knows everything happens for a reason.

Hiccup doesn't blame Toothless for what happened. Yes, he is still very upset about his father's passing and does wake up in the middle of the night from a nightmare, and it doesn't help with dragon pity. Especially from Toothless and when he can tell what his nightmare is about when he keeps muttering "Dad. I wish you were still here." Then he would be all sad and visit his father's statue, where either Valka or Astrid would find him with Toothless, a few feet back, giving him space.

There are a lot of sad times but not all the time. They still celerbrate Snoggletog, don't ask about the name. They still have dragon races, which Hiccup usually wins, or he would let Astrid win, which she doesn't complain about but earns him a punch in the arm. He doesn't complain because he thinks it's cute and if he did complain, he would get socked in the arm again and she would say, "It's not violence, it's communication." But it would always put a smile on his face, knowing she never did change. Neither did her cooking skills. But Hiccup would never tell her that. He would think it but not say it. Besides, he would get punched. No 'maybe'. She would punch him without a second thought for that.

But it's Berk and it's home.

But it just got a whole lot more difficult.
