"I'm gonna kill that fucking bitch!" Rebecca screamed as she started to move.
Colby grabbed onto her arms quickly, only seeing fury in her eyes. "We just got verbal evidence. Let the cops take care of it."
Her eyes stared through him, "Neither of us has the money for that, and you know damn well it's less paperwork if I do it myself."
As angry as he was, he knew she had every right to feel worse. "Yes, but I'd rather have my daughter's mother here instead of jail."
Rebecca shook her head, anger boiling up. "Colby-"
"I know, love. I know. But it's not worth it." He spoke quietly, and tears built up in her eyes. "She's here with us, now."
Rebecca broke down in his arms, and he clenched his jaw over her head, furious that Sarah pulled what she did. One of them needed to stay grounded at that moment, so he let his anger simmer underneath the surface instead.
He heard Rebecca whisper through her quiet cries. "Why can't we just catch a break?"
The next few days, neither of them was able to focus. Work was piling up, and so was questioning from Colby's parents. His inner need to try and make them proud wasn't even enough to get him to make him productive.
They just sat at their desks, staring at the wood tables in front of them. It was obvious that when Sarah took half of Colby's savings, this is what it went towards, causing grief for him and Rebecca. In less than a month, Colby knew his bank account was going to be completely empty for the first time ever.
"What do we do about the grave?" Rebecca's voice cracked as she came to the thought.
"I don't know." He answered blankly, "Get records and change the information on it?"
"Too much money." She replied, not wanting Colby to know she was also starting to cut off most of her spending in order to stay afloat.
"Do you know why I never put her full name on it?" Rebecca whispered, "Why I just had Ella engraved on it?"
"Yeah, you told me." He nodded, aware that she didn't think it would be a good omen, knowing it was almost his middle name. Especially being driven away from it when a baby showed up on his doorstep with the exact same name.
They went back to silence until minutes later, Colby saw Rebecca stand abruptly. His face was sketched with confusion, seeing her staring out of the glass panes into the large hall. He knew that look, the one where she didn't know what to do with herself, and when he saw her fist clenched, he followed her gaze.
He saw Sarah exit the elevator, talking to someone with papers in hand. He stood feeling his heart rate rise, his eyes darting towards Rebecca when he saw movement and watched her tie up her hair.
He immediately kept his emotions in check, knowing he had to calm her down. "Rebecca-"
"The bitch has some balls." She looked at him, body shaking from what Colby assumed was anger and adrenaline.
She watched Sarah throw some paper down at the secretary's desk, yelling and turning her head in their direction. Sarah snickered seeing Colby, and the smallest smirk pulled at Rebecca's lips when she saw her walking their way.
Rebecca wasn't normally one Colby would place in the same sentence as angry. However, if she was pushed far enough, Colby knew first hand she would become your worst enemy. He'd seen it happen before, in high school once. Holding in her anger until her fuse ran out, and she blew up.
This time, however, the situation was much worse, and Rebecca's fuse had run out months ago. Somehow, she'd managed to keep herself in check, but Colby knew this would be a perfect opportunity for her.
Rebecca didn't give Sarah a chance to enter their office door because she had already pushed the door open and walked out. Colby rushed out after her, and Sarah immediately stopped walking in their direction when she saw the look in Rebecca's eyes.
Sarah quickly started to walk backwards, and Rebecca's cackle was venomous. "Where ya going?"
Her stride never faltered, and Colby almost had to sprint to catch up and step in front of Rebecca, holding her by the waist. "Rebecca, don't do this. She could use it against you in court. It's not worth it."
"What is this?" She hissed at him, nothing but ice in her eyes. "Why are you so concerned for her?"
"What? I'm not-" Colby shook his head, "I care about you. This is to help you..."
"This is no different than you hurting Jeff." Rebecca spat, "Do you still love her?"
"No, what? I never did, you know that." Colby knew she was being irrational but her questioning him still hurt. "Rebecca, you're not thinking."
Sudden realization made her shoulders drop, and she blinked a few times. "You're right... you're right."
He nodded slowly when she looked up at him. "I'm sorry."
"Why the hell do I have a court hearing over a dead child I had nothing to do with?" Sarah screeched, "It's not my fault that bitch is a shit mother, and she's jealous my child lasted more than five minutes.
Colby smiled and looked down at the floor before back into Rebecca's eyes. Feeling her radiate with rage, "You know what, I lied. It is worth it."
He stepped aside, and she watched him carefully. "Give her hell."
Rebecca's eyes slowly and dangerously moved from Colby to Sarah, and everyone in the room watched quietly. "I may be a bitch, but I'm the bitch that's gonna make you wish you didn't last more than five minutes."
Her vision was locked onto Sarah as the rest of the world went red. The only thing Colby did was watch with a proud smile as Sarah finally got what she deserved.
