"Do you want to call someone?" Kirk asked sleepily, leaning against the phone booth of a gas station next to the hospital. He was talking to Gary Holt, explaining where he was and waiting for his friend to come pick him up. "I still have some coins left."

"No".

Zoe was sitting on the sidewalk of the empty gas station. Her back was leaning against the glass of the empty convenience store. She was hugging her arms to get rid of the early morning wind. Her face confused, expressionless, and a little angry with her feet burning for another boot and for the walk of hours ago when she decided to bring the wounded soldier to the hospital.

And what was the reason for the anger after a solidarity action? One of the only ones she had ever had in her life? Because Zoe didn't know why she did it, she didn't know where the impulse to help the boy came from, because Zoe wasn't a charitable soul at all, because Zoe wasn't a person full of good deeds and she knew that well and she was running away from that, running away from "feeling", running away from "good" to protect herself, to not feel, so she was confused about her attitude, about her action and not knowing what to do at five in the morning at a gas station sitting on a dirty fucking bench while watching the stupid boy Hammett with the swollen face talk on the phone.

But she managed to comfort her own thoughts filled with an unknown altruism. She tried to convince herself that her heroic act of carrying Kirk to the hospital was because she thought Lombardo had punched the poor boy in the face, but apparently it wasn't her jealous boyfriend who had left a huge bandage on Hammett's face.

Kirk put the phone down and walked slowly over to where Zoe was standing. He almost sat down next to her, but she stood up, seized by some impulse in her brain that made her turn away and leave Kirk with a confused expression on his face. But he quickly shrugged.

"I-I'm hungry" Zoe spoke with a shaky voice and confused eyes and a confused mind from everything that had happened in the last hour, still shocked by her own kind reactions.

Kirk kept staring at her with his non-purple eye and Zoe just shook her head frantically and looked away, shoving her hands in her pants pocket, lost, completely lost and finally entered the grocery store, not sure what she was doing there, but followed the aisles in search of some snack.
