All your life you had dreamt about leaving the Twins. Just getting away from your family and making something of yourself away from the Frey name. It wouldn't have mattered if you became a handmaiden for a Lady of the Riverlands, or if you were simply a Lady attending the royal court in King's Landing. Sometimes you even considered just running away and becoming one of the smallfolk.
You would have agreed to anything if it meant you could have even an ounce of freedom from your grandfather and the rest of your awful family.
Still, with all your wishing and prayers, you couldn't have ever expected the marriage that was arranged for you.
How could you have ever thought you'd end up married to a King?
Even once the vows were spoken and the bedding complete, you could hardly believe you were the Queen of the North.
"...and of course, you'll need your own handmaidens. The daughters of Northern houses will do, but perhaps getting one or two from the Riverlands could be wise as well. Maybe even one of your female cousins." Lady Catelyn was saying as the two of you walked across the courtyard of Winterfell.
You had only just arrived that morning, a month after the King and his soldiers who had traveled to the wall from the Twins at the urgency of Jon Snow - the King's bastard brother. You hadn't seen your husband yet, but Lady Catelyn had been quick to aid you in settling in and then in showing you around your new home.
To be honest, your husband's mother kind of scared you. She was definitely a force to be reckoned with.
"If you believe it the best course of action, My Lady. I don't have any experience in picking handmaidens," you responded softly just as you heard your name being called
Turning, you couldn't help but smile at the sight of your husband heading toward you.
"Your Grace." you curtsied, respectfully, once he was close enough to hear you. "You're looking well."
Robb greeted his mother with a kiss to her forehead before taking your hand and lifting it to his lips, "Y/n," he whispered, a warm and gentle smile on his lips, "My apologies for being absent this morning. I was in meetings with our bannermen all morning."
Shaking your head, you dismissed his apology with a quick, "You are very busy, Your Grace, there's no need to apologize for doing what you must to run your Kingdom."
You understood he had a lot on his plate. The war was still raging against House Lannister but with the death of King Joffrey, Lord Tywin, and the return of both Stark girls, Robb had chosen to put a small pause in the war and return home so he could defend the North against an army of wildlings heading for the wall.
You were grateful to be away from the Twins. You would have been content not seeing your husband until dinner, to be honest, but you wouldn't complain about having some time with him now that he was free.
You hardly knew him, and you weren't naive enough to be giggly at the mere sight of him. You had always been happy being left alone, and that was no different now than you were at Winterfell and married.
When I know him better, I will be able to miss him. For now, we are friends trying to create a safe future for thousands of others. We have our own responsibilities to think of for the time being.
We will have plenty of time to grow attached at the hip later.
Robb's smile was nothing but appreciative at your words, "I will do better as a husband, I promise." and he offered his arm saying, "I can finish your tour of the ground if you're willing."
