You were busily flying round the kitchen, throwing pots and pans into the sink, rolling out batches of dough and attempting to write out name cards. 'Four for Senora Castillo, three for Senor Arias, nine for the Ruiz family...' You kept count in your head as the timer went off. Hurling yourself towards the fryer, you whisked the finished empanadas out and replaced them with a cluster of uncooked ones. Your little rendezvous down at the Madrigal's casita had eaten up quite a bit off your time, meaning you were now behind schedule! As you flung down more dough, a cloud of flour ascended from the counter top into your face, causing you to sneeze. You rubbed your nose with your hand and sighed, catching a glimpse of your dishevel state in the mirror. Your hair was wild like a forest, your face was now covered in fine, white powder and your clothes were covered in stray bits of dough, carrot and potato. You tried, in vain, for about five minutes to get yourself looking half decent. Curse those empanadas! Oh no the empanadas! You darted over to the fryer again to see five black blobs and a reflection of your horrified face staring back at you. They were burnt. Great. Of cause today of all days, when you hardly had any time to spare, was the one day you forgot to reset the timer! Feeling dejected, you used the tongues to fish the small balls of grief and pain out of the bubbling oil and strait into the bin. That was when you heard the quiet giggle behind you. Spinning around on your heel, you came face to face with an amused looking girl.
"Having trouble?" She asked. You buried your face into her chest and nodded. "I burnt them, Mirabel. All that time and those ingredients wasted." Your voice was muffled as you clung to your best friend. She smiled sympathetically and pulled you into a hug, stroking your hair. "Do you want some help Y/n?" Mirabel offered and tried not to burst out laughing when you jumped up excitedly. "Really, you'll help me?!" Your eyes sparkled with hope as your friend reached out and grabbed an apron. "Let's do this." Together you punched the air and set back to work. Soon you were flying through the village's orders, packing them up in your large basket on the table. And that was how you spent the rest of the morning, cooking, laughing and cleaning together until all the work was done.
"Thank you so much Mirabel. You're a real life saver!" You thanked her. The girl, who was now your hero, gave you a large smile and told you she was always happy to help. "But if you really want to show me how grateful you are then..." You raised an eyebrow, wondering where this was going. Mirabel took a deep breath and blurted out: "OkaySo,MarianoIsGoingToProposeToIsabalaSoonAndAbwelaWant'sEverythingToBePerfectSoWeAreAllHavingADinnerPartyToCelebrateAndIt'sGoingToBeReallyBoringAndAwkwardSo... Will you come too?" What was that? She looked at you with her best puppy dog eyes while you just stared in confusion. "Huh?" Furrowing your brows, you tried to piece together everything that she had just said. Mirabel wanted you to go to Isabela's engagement meal-party-thing so that she wouldn't be board. You were about to refuse when the basket full of fresh empanadas caught your eye. You suddenly felt a wave of guilt wash over you. She had spent her whole morning helping you because of your bad time management so you supposed you could spend one afternoon eating tea with a 'love struck couple'. Groaning, you agreed. "Fineeeee I'll come. When is it?" Mirabel grinned, "You're the best Y/n, it's in a few days." You nodded and made a note in the calendar that simply read 'Meal'. "Speaking of your family," you chattered absentmindedly, "What do you think Antonio's gift will be? He's getting it tomorrow right?"
You spoke together for a few more minutes until Rosa came into the room. "You girls," She chuckled, "You've done so well making all of this yourselves." The two of you smiled and flushed from the compliment. "Thank you." You both replied before the woman ushered you out of the house, "Now go deliver them! I need to start coming up with wedding cake designs." As you and Mirabel left the house you could still hear your 'mother' muttering to herself. "It needs flowers for Isabela and, what does that Mariano boy like..." You grinned, rolling your eyes. "I wonder if they'll have children!" At that, you snorted and Mirabel cracked up. Then, together, you ran to the first house to deliver the steaming goods you had fried.
After what seemed like four hundred and ninety seven years, you had finally given out everything you had to everyone who had ordered them. You felt tired but accomplished. "Finally!" Your friend sighed, pushing her glasses up her nose. Laughing in agreement, you followed her into town. Well it looked like you were now roped in to helping her with some last minute shopping for Antonio's gift celebration. The first stop, the firework shop! "Good afternoon," Mirabel chirped, "can I order an extra special firework bundle." The man stared at her for a second before replying. "Well if it isn't Mirabel Madrigal! You're the only one in your family who doesn't have a gift right? Your just a normal, ordinary, totally not special person just like us!" You deadpanned as the girl beside you gave him a tight, awkward smile. "Yup, that's me. Now about those fireworks..." "Wow that must really suck, huh, being the only one who isn't super amazing or talented!" The man butted in again. Your face soured and you got a very strong urge to punch this guy in the gut. "Haha right," Mirabel forced a laugh, "I'd like to order them for delivery tomorrow, please." You could tell she was trying her hardest to ignore him. "I can't imagine how awful it would be to be the only person who didn't get a gift, I bet it sucks not being special like the rest of your family!" Your friend was shifting her weight from one leg to the other, uncomfortably. Giving the shop owner a harsh glare, you pulled Mirabel out the door. You turned to look back into the shop and yelled, "Just have those fireworks ready for tomorrow, at the Madrigal's casita!"
Once you were far away from that place, you turned to your best friend. "Don't listen to that stupid man. He's just jealous that you're a Madrigal." The girl nodded, trying to keep a happy face. "It's fine Y/n, I-I'm fine..." You could tell she was lying but you knew that she would never admit it. "You know you can always talk to me right?" You asked and Mirabel nodded, promising you that if she ever needed to talk, she would come strait to you. Another lie. Sighing, you took her hand in yours and began to lead her into her favourite shop in the encanto. If you couldn't help her by having a conversation maybe you could help take her mind off of it instead. This seemed to work as soon the girl was running in circles, buying more and more embellishments for her skirt. Smiling, you chose a few of your own buttons and patches and went over to purchase them. On your way over to the counter, you spotted an orange and green, embroidered sew-on patch shaped like a chameleon. Grinning, you added it to your pile. You knew a certain shape shifter who would like that very much.
