*Crack*
Mirabel had jumped to cover the crack before anyone, even you, had seen it. She gave Mariano an awkward smile and thumbs up, urging him to continue. He did, turning to Isabella while holding out the ring. You noticed that your best friends attention had been captured by something under the table but you tried your best to just focus on the proposal, mentally willing it to hurry up! It was stalled again when everybody turned towards Luisa, who had broke down sobbing over the piano she couldn't lift. Finally, the Guzman uttered the words that would end this treacherous night.
"Will you marry-"
Only to be cut off by Mirabel diving under the table. Lusia fell to the floor, lightning flashed throughout the room and the wind speed picked up. Mariano's mother shrieked.
"What is happening?"
You shrank back, terrified, as Dolores began to spill the truth.
"Mirabel found Bruno's vision, she's in it, she's gonna destroy the magic and then we're all Doomed!" The, somehow pieced together, vision was suddenly hurled across the table, landing right in front of Abwela Alma. You held your breath, reaching out for Mirabel as the woman's eyes trailed up to stare at her. The girl's breathing was erratic and her heart raced. She tired to make out the look on her Abwela's face but it couldn't be discerned. You took a step back, mind racing, wishing that you could just wake up from this nightmare when suddenly the wall began to shake. Nobody had time to think or react as more cracks split through the house, tearing through the rooms and furniture.
You froze, staring in horror as small chunks of plaster dropped from the ceiling. Everything was quaking dangerously. You rushed over to pull Camilo away from where the plates had begun to fall out of the cabinet. The room was filled with confuzed shouts and calls of concern as you clung to your friend in fear. He wrapped his arms around you, whether it was to sooth you or himself was unclear.
Gifts stared to go crazy! You could feel Camilo involuntarily shifting in your arms and, when you looked up, a huge, black cloud had formed in the center of the room. A flower bursed from the floor, smacking Mariano in the nose, hard. Dolores had slammed her hands over her ears and was wincing in pain, while some of the food that Julietta had made had begun to crumble.
Everybody jumped when the doors bursed open to reveal a group of smiling towns folk holding up a '¡Felicidades!' banner. Their faces dropped at the sight of the families before it began to rain.
The two Guzmans turned and ran out of the casita, closely followed by Alma, Mirabel and a few others in the family. You glanced up to look into Camilo's wide, scared eyes. He'd lifted up his ruana to shield you both from the down pour so you were huddled close to his side. He broke the eye contact to look around his home. Dark, jagged lines were etched into every surface. Cutlery was broken, chairs were over turned and everything was soaking wet. You brought a hand to his head, stroking his hair softly.
"A...are you okay Cami?" You moved to bring your hand away but he gripped it in his, placing it back on his hair. His eyes were glassy and his face switched between many different emotions.
"I...I don't know..." You brought him over to the chair next to his sister to sit down.
"Dolores?" It was only a whisper but even that caused her to flinch. She met your gaze before shaking her head and rushing off back to her room. From down the hall you heard the door slam and Abwela yelling out for Mirabel, followed by a crash of lightning and thunder.
Camilo winced and stood up, turning to face you sadly.
"I think it might be for the best if you go...I... Don't want you getting caught up in our mess." The boy offered you a forced smile and you sighed.
"Are you sure, cariño, I want to make sure you're all alright." He pulled you into a tight hug.
"Aww, you really are the sweetest, mi querida, but I'm sure. I need to go check on Mami and I bet Mira needs some space after... all that." Camilo looked away, "I'm sorry you didn't get to enjoy dinner."
"Don't be stupid, Tu loco, it's you guys I'm worried about not dinner!" Sighing, you gave him one final squeeze. "I hope you're all alright, truly. Don't hesitate to ask us if you need anything, okay, even it's it's just someone to talk to!"
"Thanks." You nodded, stepping away while giving him a concerned yet soft look. He smiled lightly, "You really are amazing, I ... We ... don't deserve you." Your cheeks flushed as the boy gave you one final wave and retreated into the depths of the casita. Entranced, you stood there gazing after him for a good few seconds before you came to your senses. Shaking your head, you gave casita a few loving strokes before steeping out into the rain.
It was dark but, thanks to the lanterns of the villagers from earlier, you could still see clearly. They were only slightly ahead of you, having been turned away by an outraged Alma five minutes prior. One of the crowd turned back and caught a glimpse of you. He broke away from the rest of the group and ran back to you with full force. Lifting your head, you recognized him as Julio.
"Hey, Julio." You greeted, downcast and gloomy but trying to appear as optimistic as you usually were.
"Oh, hermosa are you okay? I heard shouts and just knew something was wrong!" Your head fell and your eyes focused on what you could see if the ground in the dim light. You didn't even pick up in the fact he'd called you beautiful.
"It was... a lot. I don't really wanna talk about it."
"I understand," he nodded solemnly wrapping his arm around your shoulders, "I'm here if you need to talk, though." You thanked him despite his close proximity leaving you feeling slightly uncomfortable. He was making an effort and you appreciated that.
The two of you walked together in silence until you reached your home. Julio hugged you tightly, planting a small kiss on your hand as you entered the doorway.
"Thank you for walking me home, I know it's a bit out of the way for you to go." You gave him a small smile opening the door.
"Of course, anything to help you feel even a little better," he bowed his head, "your happiness means a lot to me." His gaze connected with yours and your breath hitched at the look of pure adoration on his face. Heart thundering in your chest, you smiled quickly and turned away. Just before you could step inside he called out to you.
"Oh and, if you're free anytime tomorrow, I'd love to take you somewhere to get a drink maybe? I'd be happy to do whatever you wanted!" Your face grew hot. Was he... Asking you on a date?! You felt flattered as a smile made its way onto your face.
"I'll have to check with Mami but that does sound nice! Goodnight Julio."
"Goodnight, Hermosa."
But, deep down, a part of you felt 'off' about the idea. No matter how much you thought of the possibility of dating Julio Ruiz, no matter how hard you tried, you just couldn't get that giddy feeling of a crush to surface.
