Dex stared at the burning water in front of him. He probably should turn off the stove, but he couldn't find it in him to move his hand from his side.

Besides, he was too busy beating himself up to worry about it.

What were you thinking? You don't shout that out loud, especially where Rex can hear it. And to Bex? She would have told him immediately. That was the dumbest move you possibly could have ma-

His mental chiding was halted, however, when Bex appeared at the entrance. She hurried over the stove, turning it off before it could boil over.

"What are you doing?" she hissed, before pausing

"What are you doing?" she said, less hostile this time

"I-I was making coffee," Dex said, suddenly ashamed of himself. Again.

Bex sighed, then paused. Gesturing to the table, She told him to sit down had poured the boiling water into a strainer(is that the proper term? Also, I'm just assuming elves have coffee at this point)

After she mixed the coffee, she gave him the mug and sat down next to him.

"Listen, You made a big mistake" Dex wanted to roll his eyes. Obviously. but kept quiet.

"But, to be fair, there isn't really a social guide to how to tell your brother he's-" SHe choked up, and Dex wanted to crawl in a hole and die

"You know" she finished lamely, but Dex knew. Oh boy, did he know.

"He's going to avoid you for a while. I'll do my best, but you're going to have to trust me here." She paused, looking at him. Dex nodded to show he was listening.

"You're going to have to go back and forth. If you say no, he'll be mad. If you say yes, he'll get mad. What you have to do is try to alternate, but lean to letting him do his own thing. He needs a little space"

The conversation died out after a little.

"He didn't tell Lex," Bex told him, startling Dex.

"Tell him what?" Dex asked on instinct

Bex turned from the window to face him

"You know what"

"Yeah, right" dex scratched at the back of his neck sheepishly

After a moment, Bex stood up

"We're going to hail the collective and ask for Mom, and we're hailing Elwin"

Dex paused as he brought the mug to his lips.

"Wait," he said, dragging out the word

"Didn't mom say she was hailing Elwin?"

"Yeah?" Bex said, not getting what he meant

"Then why isn't he here?" Dex said
