Chapter ~ 6

"Just give it time" "Papi off to work yet?" Milo asked. I entered the room wondering whom he was talking to, and than I heard Mami's voice.

"Is that Mami?" I asked him just to make sure, and as soon as Mami heard my voice she spoke "Oh, Liz, mi hija, don't let Valentina's words get to you alright? give her sometime."
"Mami, don't worry about it, I'll take care of her. Is Papi already gone for work?" I asked.

"He did, he did. I'm all alone now, I'm not used to being alone" mami replied. "Mami try doing something, making yourself busy for some time, It might help distract you a little" "Mami, I've got to go back to study for some tests buenas noches mami, love you" I said as I wished her goodnight and headed back to my room.

Next Morning

Just as I was about to leave for college Emilio and I got a phone call from the school asking us to meet up, something about Beto. I did volunteer to go together with Milio but he didn't let me come, instead asked me to go to college, I didn't argue much coz I knew I had to make up for the all the days I had missed.

After my college, I went to pick Rafa up from day care. There was still some time so I decided to walk around with Rafa a little, we didn't get much time to take him out for a walk since we were all well busy trying to work things out.

As we were walking around the small playground I noticed a flyer stuck on the wall, It mentioned about wanting to hire an assistant at the library near my college, I quickly tore the flyer off from the wall and put it in my bag.

I walked around for a while and decided to take a sit under the shade of the trees. I already had Rafa's bottle with me and some baby food I brought at the store on my way here. I didn't have to worry about him crying if he was hungry, I was prepared with everything.

I sat him down and played with him for a while, as we were playing suddenly I heard Rafa calling out "Mama" and reaching out for me, I was overwhelmed with all the emotions, I didn't know what to say, he was a child who was separated from his parents, he had yet to learn everything.

Honestly, I wouldn't blame him, It was the world which was being unfair to us all. To be honest I did cry a little, it was too much for me. I was only 21, and I never thought I'd be one day separated from my own parents and end up having to look after my baby brother.
Just as I was to leave, I got a text from Emilio.

~ Hey, Liz.
Beto got put on academic probation.
And now their gonna be watching us.

I read the text, I knew it would have happened sooner or later, but I never thought It would be this soon.

I finally packed all the things and picked Rafa up, now heading back home.

Later at home

After I reached home, I quickly made Rafa sit in his chair. and started preparing for dinner. I knew Beto and Emilio might not be in a good mood, therefore I wanted to prepare something comforting to eat, and decided to make tortilla soup. It was easy and one of the first things Mami taught me to make.

As I was busy preparing the dinner, I heard the front door bell ringing, I quickly went and opened the door and Val rushed inside happily. Looking at her smile made me really happy, although I did wonder what the reason was, but I figured she'd tell it to me eventually and she did later.

I quickly run back to the kitchen to make sure nothing in the pot got burnt, and kept an eye on it while preparing the other items required. And just as I had expected Val came to me and started tell me how happy she was because Lucia finally came into the church and prayed together with her.

So that was the reason for that smile on Vals face, honestly even I was happy because Luce finally went to church on her own without being forced. It made me happy to see this new change in Luce.

After a while Beto came in, I could tell by his face he wasn't okay, so knowing both Val and Lucia were upstairs I called Beto in the kitchen so that I could talk to him.

"Hey? Bey, why that face? look at me, Milio has told me everything, don't worry, we'll be fine, okay? Luce will help you study, If you still find it hard, come find me I'll do my best to help you." "And it not your fault, we knew this would've happened sooner or later, now we just got to make sure we try our best to make things work."

It looked like Beto was about to cry, but before I could ask him if I had said anything wrong, he hugged me and started sobbing, 'poor bey, he's been blaming himself this whole time' I thought to myself.

"Thank you, Liz. It meant a lot, I'm gonna work hard from now on" Bey promised me.

Dinner was already done and I had asked Bey to call Luce and Val for dinner. Emilio texted he had some work and he would come home a bit late, so I kept his portion of soup separately. And continued our dinner that night.
