The peace ball at fidèllueur.Desmond's perspective
Today has been a hard day for me. Setting up the decorations. And anxiously awaiting the guests. There's one particular guest I'm anxious to see. I reach my hand into my waistcoat pocket and wrap it around a square box. I breathe deeply, If I don't focus on my breathing I might hyperventilate.
The ball was going well until I saw her. Then my knees turned to jelly and I ran away. I went through the kitchen door. Up through the service steps and now I'm sitting with my back up against the wall on the other side of the grand entrance to the ballroom. I can hear the music and laughter. But I can't bring myself to go in.
I take out the box and stare at the content. For the millionth time, I imagine what I'm going to say to Amber. What this ring would look like on her finger. What dancing with her would feel like. I almost end up walking in. But fear wells up inside me and I'm paralyzed. I slump down, my head on my knees.
"Des?"I look up to see James. My face flushes and I snap the ring box shut which only brings attention to the fact that I'm holding a ring box.
"He's over here guys," James calls motioning with his hand. Rounding the corner comes Hugo and Zander.
"You were looking for me?"
"Yeah man, you think we wouldn't notice that you weren't at your own party."Hugo claps me on the shoulder.
"Besides that, you are our bro. Although Hildegard wasn't too happy I had to sacrifice our time dancing together to come to look for you. But you're worth it man."Zandar adds.
"And as your bro, I'm telling you to get your butt back in there and ask my sister to marry you," James growls at me.
"What! n-no, I c-couldn't. She'd p-probably say n-no anyway. My words fall out of my mouth and a stuttering jumbled mess.
"I know it's scary but you can do it,"Hugo adds comfortingly.
"Dude. What's scarier? Losing her forever or asking her?"James makes eye contact and his words are forceful. They send me rocketing to my feet.
"I didn't think it was that hard," Zander adds. James hits him in the stomach and Hugo covers his mouth. Both of them are still smiling at me and it's creepy.
I turn around and walk towards the grand entrance. I take a deep breath before plunging in and pushing the grand entrance doors open. The chamberlain standing at the side of the door looks startled to see me re-entering. But he announces me anyway. My eyes lock upon Amber as I descend the staircase. She's standing at the bottom looking up at me.
A slow song begins to play right as I descend the last few steps. I extend my hand to Amber's and whisk her onto the floor. Like something out of a fairy tale, the floor clears and it's just me and her. I finally remember all of my dance lessons as we waltz. The entire time she never breaks eye contact. It terrifies me and puts me at ease at the same time. Halfway through the song, she steps closer to me, inviting me to tighten my grip around her waist. She hasn't spoken a word but her smile speaks volumes.
As I hear the last notes of the song fade out, I feel myself stop breathing.
"Amber I- I've always admired you. Your passion, your leadership, your bravery. Your kindness and intelligence make you a good friend. Knowing all these things about you has lead me to decide -"
I kneel down on one knee pulling the ring box out. "T-That I want to spend the rest of my l-life with you. W-Will you marry me?"

"Yes!!"Amber throws her arms around my neck and hugs me. She almost knocks the ring out of my hands but I catch it just in time. When she stands back up I slide the ring on her finger Then I rise to join her. We're surrounded by a crowd of people but all I'm really aware of is her hand in mine.
