not so unrequited

It was a few months since everyone came back from the blip, including Y/N. Gosh, even though she couldn't remember the last five years, frankly, because she didn't exist, she felt so weird coming back. Everything had changed. People changed, they grew up. Well, not everything changed. Y/N's love for her friend was still intact. Y/N had fallen deeply in love for Bucky in Wakanda. Steve had sent her with him to keep an eye on him, and to make sure that he didn't feel alone.

When Y/N's eyes saw Bucky's for the first time, everything went downhill from there. Her mission was basically to take care of the man, and make sure he doesn't get into trouble. But for some reason she just couldn't imagine that this man would ever hurt someone, not willingly.

What had initially started as a task of simply keeping an eye on him, became so much more. Y/N had grown very close with Bucky. They would sit outside and just watch the stars, while Bucky slowly let his walls crumble around her. She was falling for him, hard. Everything was perfect... until Bucky was told that Steve would be here any minute and that they had to fight against aliens.

Y/N and Bucky were besides each other when the blip took them. Bucky was first, Y/N could still remember the moment vividly. He faded away and she had to watch, frightened at what will happen next. She sobbed against Steve's chest, as he tried to calm her down. Thanos did it, he won, and he took her happiness with him.

Five years later passed and the people who were left in the world tried to live normally, as if half of the planet wasn't wiped out. It was very hard for Y/N, every day was a reminder about how much of a coward she was and never got to tell Bucky that she loved him. At least she had Steve and Nat for support. Some days she felt fine, good even, but some days were worse than others. She mourned Bucky for months at first, even if Steve kept reassuring her that they will find a way to bring everyone back. She wanted to be hopeful, she really did, but she found it hard not to think negatively.

So when Scott Lang comes to the Avengers with a plan, she finally believes that perhaps she'll see Bucky again. And she did. She didn't get a chance to greet him once he came back, with the whole 'we're in a middle of a battle' situation, but she was pretty sure she has never felt so happy in her life.

After they defeated Thanos, now things felt normal again. The Avengers compound got some new members, rooms were full, everyone was happy. Y/N thought she would be too, but that wasn't the case. After Bucky came back, he seemed off. He was very distant towards her and it didn't help when Y/N saw him flirt with other women. She intended to tell him, she really did. The three words on the tip of her tongue, but her fear got the best of her once again. Her fear of Bucky not wanting her, or leaving her in the future if they did get together. She was physically strong but she didn't know if she was emotionally strong enough for that amount of pain.

Bucky was pulling away from her but when suddenly he tells her if she can cut his hair, the small spark of hope tingles within her. She cut it quite short, just as requested, and it was really unfair to see how handsome he looked. She didn't think that was possible but here he was, looking so god damn irresistible with his blue eyes and his newly cut hair.

"What's the occasion?" Y/N asked, she knew Bucky enough to know that he wouldn't do this for just a random change.

"I have a date tonight." He said with a smile. Y/N stopped breathing. Her heart pounded against her chest and she felt faint.

"Oh. That- that's good." She cleared her throat before cleaning the hair on the floor and the counter.

"Isn't it?"

"I'm happy for you, Buck." Lies. All she wanted to do was lock herself in her room and cry until the next morning. Tears briefly began to pool in her eyes before Bucky frowned.
