The next day I drove up to Pico's house with a rental car. I had my driver's license, but I like walking, and cars are really expensive, so I never bought one.

"I brought us some snacks." He placed his suitcase in the back of the car and got into the passenger seat.

"Nice! I brought the apple cider doughnuts from yesterday." I grabbed the snack bag from him and put it in between us. The drive would take a while, around 27 hours. I was hoping to stop at a motel on the way, but since I have Pico, we could take turns driving. Not to mention, energy drinks exist.

I pulled up my parents house on the gps. I turned to look at him, and I could tell he was excited.

"Ready?"

"Ready."

...

It'd been around 10 hours since we started. I had drank almost 3 cans of Monster trying to stay awake. On the other hand, Pico was sleeping on the passenger side.

"Seventeen hours left.." I mumbled to myself, turning on some music.

A few minutes later, Pico woke up in a jolt. I could hear him breathing heavily and he looked pretty shaken up. He put his hands on his face and I couldn't tell if he was crying or just rubbing his eyes.

"Are you ok?"

"Don't worry about me, I'm perfectly fine." He reached around to the backseat, grabbing a bag of chips. "When's the next gas station?"

"About 10 minutes away."

"Good, I'll drive so you can sleep." He stared out the window in a daze. I wonder what he'd been dreaming about..

We soon reached the gas station Pico jumped out of the car and after a while he came back with an energy drink and sat in the driver's seat. He put the key in the ignition and turned the car on.

"Uhm.. what do you wanna do when we get to Colorado?" I broke the silence, trying to get him to talk to me.

"I dunno." He seemed distracted by something.

"I heard they have a cool Zoo.."

"Sure." I hadn't even said anything about going.. I guess he just doesn't want to talk right now. It probably has something to do with his dream.

I stared out the window and quickly fell asleep, trying not to think about it.

...

"Hey Keith, wake up." I slowly sat up as I opened my eyes to Pico staring at me.

"Are we here?"

"Yep!" He seemed to be in a better mood.

"I'll drive us to a hotel once we see my mom." I had already told her I was bringing a friend, so it wouldn't be a big surprise.

I hopped out of the car and instinctively grabbed onto Pico's hand. We made our way to the door and I rang the doorbell. I smiled and turned around to look at Pico, who's face was red and was smiling back awkwardly. I gave him a quizical look, as his eyes darted down to our hands. I realized I was squeezing Pico's hand and my face flushed. I pulled my hand away and turned around to the open door.

My mom was staring, wide eyed, at the both of us.

My eyes widened too and my face probably looked like a tomato. Pico was probably losing his shit behind me.

"Come on in." She smiling awkwardly as she held the door for us.

We both sat down on the couch, avoiding eye contact with each other.

"So Keith.. who's your uh.. friend there?" My mom wasn't homophobic, I knew that, but it was an awkward encounter.

"This is Pico." "Pico." We both talked over each other.

Pico cleared his throat, "I'm Pico. Nice to meet..you..?" He forced a smile.

"Alice." They both shook hands. "Both of Keith's sisters are asleep right now, and his brother is sleeping in a motel down the road."

"Alright then, we can come back over tomorrow." I got up, waving my hand for Pico to get up too. He looked at me funny and then stood up, smiling awkwardly.

"Hold on Keith, is Pico your boyfriend?"

"No, no! We're just friends.. IjustaccidentallyheldhishandthinkinghewasCherryforgettingthatCherrybrokeupwithmeandthatwasawkwardandimsosorryPico." I cringed at myself.

"You're fine, it was a mistake, we all make mistakes!" I could tell Pico was cringing too as he said that.

"Ok, you two sleep well." My mom said as we walked to the front door and left.

"You too mom!" I shouted back at her as she closed the door.

"That was.." Pico started, he was still a little flustered, "weird.

"Let's forget about this."

"Mhm."

We got back into the car and I drove us to a hotel a couple blocks away. We lugged our stuff into our hotel room, which thankfully had two beds.

"You can pick," Pico said.

"Uhm. Can I have the window bed?"

"Yeah, of course." Pico sat down on the other bed and pulled out his phone.

I have to continue writing the next chapter tomorrow, so it might take a bit for the next one!
