Lydia

My hands trembled on the knob as the door bell resounded through the house again for the second time. I didn't know what I was expecting. I take a deep breath and open the door seeing a totally different person on my front porch.

"Will?" My jaw falls open but I quickly snap it shut. I don't see my nerdy best friend anymore, I see a fucking hunk. Will's glasses were gone, I'm guessing he invested in some contacts, his hair was up in a quiff and there was no sign of plaid on his body. He was wearing a gray button down short sleeved shirt that fit rather very nicely on his body, khaki shorts, and blue sperry's.

Not gonna lie, he looked hot.

"You look amazing." He chuckles as his eyes drift up and down.

"You too. What happened?" I realized how I sounded so I try to save myself. "That came out wrong... I-I mean I never knew you were this fashionable." I stammer.

"It was time for a change so I've been saving up some money." He shrugs. "I don't think you ever noticed but I've been slowly changing myself for you but after today I was tired of waiting."

I was at a loss of words. "Well... you look good."

"Ready to go?"

I nod as I make my way to the familiar truck. He quickly cuts in front of me to open the door. I slid in and mumbled a thank you.

I was so confused. I don't think he ever did that to me before. I couldn't help but think that maybe Mom was right. I thought back to our tickle fight and felt sick. I really didn't want things to change between us. Maybe Will really did like me.

My best friend suddenly disappeared and was replaced with someone who sort of looked like him but was completely different. It's hard to believe that a science nerd just became a jock in the matter of a few hours. The social ladder didn't work that way. Right?

"The next thing I'm going to change is this old truck. Maybe with a porsche or something. Wouldn't that be good? Maybe a Ferrari..."

"Why would you want to do that Will? We had so many memories in this car. Who are you?" I couldn't hold it in anymore.

"I'm the same person! Just new and improved. I want to be someone that girls notice, and a person that people would want to hang out with. I'm good in school grade-wise but I want more. I don't want to just be smart, I want to have more friends. I mean you are my best friend but I just don't want to sit in the sidelines anymore. Besides, you inspired it! I thought you would be pleased."

"What are you talking about, Will."

"You remember the day when the jocks were teasing me in class? You told me not to listen to them because they don't know how amazing I really was. You said that I have to be the person I want to be. And this is who I want to be."

"Will, I think you look amazing but I did before too." I say softly.

"Really?" He said with a hopeful expression.

"I've known you since we were six years old. You're like the favorite brother I never had."

His face fell and his jaw clenched. He started driving on the highway and didn't glance at me.

"I never wanted to be your brother, Lydia."

I didn't know how to feel, I didn't like hurting him. I didn't know what to say or do so I just stared ahead the rest of the way.

We pull up to Applebee's and find a booth. After a rather uncomfortable dinner, most of it being awkward silences, we make our way to the movie theater.

"Why aren't you eating? Aren't you hungry?" He asks.

"Not really, but if I'm hungry I'll get some snacks in the movie theater."

"Alright. Anyway, dinner's on me."

"No, no. Let me pay half."

"It's fine, Lyd."

I sigh in defeat. I really didn't want this to be like a date. But he wouldn't hear of it, he swatted my money away.

"Who are you texting?" I ask Will, his eyes glued to his phone.

"Ana." He says in a clipped tone. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and sighed with relief. Maybe he didn't like me like that after all.

"Send her a picture!" I exclaim, grabbing the phone from his hands. "She needs to see how hot you look tonight."

"You think I look hot?" He smiles.

"Yes, now stop slouching! Give me a sexy smolder."

He laughs and joins his lips together.

"No that's a duck face! Do a smolder!" I giggle. "Make the face when you see a really hot girl and you're like 'I want you baby.'"

His look changed immediately and he did the smolder. I was surprised. He actually did it. I took the picture and handed the phone back.

"Ana's gonna love it." I reassure him as we walk into the movie theater.

"I'm going to send it to you too, it can be my contact picture."

"uh okay." I smile.

He grabs my forearm and we take our seats. I sighed, not happy that it became all awkward again. I'm glad we're watching a movie though, we don't have to talk much.

After a few minutes of sitting and watching the opening commercials, I felt a body slide into the seat next to mine.

My breath catches as I realize who it is.

"Hey Lydia." His raspy voice sounds as his lips pull into a smile, his dimples prominent on his face,

It's Nat Montgomery.
