Beth's rugby skills were getting better and better through practice. Every time she was in a match, Alvin and her friends sat in the audience stand where dramatic cheering happens. "You killed it Beth! You are the best! Hey Jasmine, look at that serve!" Alvin shouted. When the game paused, Alvin ran to Beth like a puppy and handed her a bottle of water, asking "Are you tired?" while eyeing her with admiration and concern. Beth opened the bottle of water and took a long swig, saying, "I'm alright, but the opponent's hooker may not be after this match. She is playing dirty and everyone knows it." "Dirty how?" Alvin asked, blinking. "She keeps dodging physical contact by shouting nonsense and cursing our mothers and running like a crab." Beth said, swinging her sore arms. "Well that sounds quite clever, maybe you can try it sometimes." Alvin said, licking his dry lips. "What do you mean? Don't you understand that I'm not that kind of person?" Beth spat, walking away. "Just so you could save some strength for the big games." Alvin said trying to grab her shoulder. Beth suddenly turned towards him and brushed his hands away, "There will be no game if we don't play by the rules. You will never understand that because you break all of them!" Alvin was shocked, "The only rule I break is writing your homework!" "That's bullshit, you are late for class half of the time and sometimes you took off your socks in the middle of a class so that Joe could smell your big smelly toes!" Alvin's face was red. He stayed silent for a moment then said with gritted teeth, "Suit yourself, people like you obey rules because they have no sense of humour and nothing better to do." Beth's mouth dropped open like an O and before Alvin can react, she pushed him angrily and roughly by the shoulders and walked away. Alvin's eyes were red with anger and humiliation, but he said nothing more.

After the match, it suddenly started to rain heavily. Alvin was the only one without an umbrella. To his surprise, even Jasmine did not lent him one because nobody want to be near him after his row with Beth. He got home in the pouring rain, using a plastic bag as cover and running as fast as possible.

By dinner time, Alvin started to miss Beth and wondered if he had made a mistake. He gave her several calls but none were picked up. Then he started to wonder if Beth was ill or over tired, so he started to text her. "Hey how are you?" after 1 hour of no reply, he texted, "I'm sorry, I went way out of line and said a lot of ridiculous things that I never should. I deserve the worst punishment ever imaginable on mankind and I plead guilty for being a rude, impudent, reckless fuck and what I said by no means reflect truthfully what I really think of you. I'm really sorry and I want you back right now because I will literally suffocate and die without you. I would live and die by your words and your words alone and if you do not forgive me I shall forever be haunted by the ghost of you." After receiving no reply for 3 hours, Alvin shed some tears and fell asleep.

On the next day, Beth did not pick Alvin up as usual so Alvin got to school riding his bicycle. When he got into the classroom, he was surprised to find Beth was already there and talking to Steve, who recently broke up with his girlfriend. "Harry Potter would not have been the chosen one if not for his parents, but Ron on the other hand get to where he was through his own efforts and bravery. In my opinion Ron could have a greater role in the battle of Hogwarts." Steve was saying this with zest, his eyes alive and dancing, looking straight at Beth. "But Harry Potter was ready to die for everyone else, isn't that bravery in the highest sense?" Beth asked lazily. "Fun fact, psychopath's are more ready to die for others than normal people." Alvin chipped in, then added in a cheery note, "But our dear Potter definitely was thinking about Ginny when he made that difficult decision." Alvin wrapped his arms around Beth's waist but Beth cleverly avoided his touch, stepping away from him. "Alvin, our lady's man, forever present at his girlfriend's side, long time no see." Steve said coldly. "I am only with Beth when she wants me to." Alvin said, face reddening rapidly. "Did I say I want you here? Where's my homework?" Beth asked casually. "Oh, here, and could I ask, did you by any chance see my apology text last night?" Alvin asked, unashamed. "Rules are not meant to be broken Alvin. And one of them is that you will never be rude to me. You broke that yesterday and now we are broken. I will require you to do not only mine but Jannette and Jasmine's homework from now on. PS you forgot to clarify that you ARE stupid and dishonest and rude as hell and should go to hell." Beth said in one breath. "Okie dokie." Alvin raised his eyebrows, "So you are not angry anymore?" Beth returned to her seat and said nothing.

The cold war lasted for days on end during which Alvin suffered in magnanimous silence and Beth triumphed. It was not until 7 more apologies and 9 gifts after that Alvin was granted the wish of forgiveness in the form of a gentle kiss on his forehead.
