You twirl on the tip of your toes and start running in the opposite direction from the gym. His grin flustered you to the bones, like thief getting caught stealing what he adored. While fleeing down the corridor you mumble to yourself 'great now he must thinks I'm a stalker or something'.
You stop when you finally feel you're out of his field of vision. You lean on the chemistry lab's door in order to catch your breath. You can hear voices from inside the lab. You couldn't help but eavesdrop.
"What Napoleon complex? for real?"
"but he's not that short"
"well Akashi is the captain and the shortest player in the team maybe he feels insecure"
"so that intimidating look on his face is just a mask to hide his insecurity that's embarrassing"
"man this could ruin his reputation"
"yeah; his teammates even suspect he has some kinda personality disorder"
"damn this is just sad now"
You start running again. Afraid, that if you keep listening the conversation would just keep getting worse. This is too much for anyone to take in. You felt like you were invading his personal matters. That this is something you shouldn't have heard. You were angry at yourself for eavesdropping but you were angrier at those boys for gossiping about someone's mental state like it was no big deal. You didn't see their faces and neither could you recognize their voices. You wanted to confront them that what they were talking about was none of their business and it was utterly wrong, but you couldn't you didn't have the guts to stand up for him. You hated yourself for being such a pussy. You then promise yourself that next time you'd speak your mind and not run away neither from those bullies nor Akashi, but you knew how fragile all your promises are.
With your head down you head upstairs back to your classroom to get your stuff and go home. Almost everyone already left. It was getting cloudy as if the weather was changing with your mood. You were feeling nauseous; you could feel the iron deficiency kicking in. You wondered if what they said was true, you shake your head trying to push out those thoughts. Even if it's true you shouldn't change the way you perceive him. Holding your books close to your chest you kept walking at a slow pace with your head down trying to hide your gloomy face. On your way into the classroom, you bump into someone without even looking up you apologize. The person grabs you by the elbow making you lift up your head.
"Akashi"
"I thought I'd find you here I was was looking everywhere" he stops talking when he notices the somber look on your face "Is something wrong?"
"no no nothing's wrong," you said trying your best to put on a fake smile.
Akashi didn't pressure you to tell him anything "okay just know that you are always welcome to come to watch me practice."
The genuineness in his voice lit up your face. Your fake soft smile turned into a real one. "Sure I'll come by sometime"
"you can come now"
You shook your head in hesitation "I think I should go home now its getting late. I'll drop by tomorrow for sure"
"Alright then bye-bye"
"bye"
He left the room. You didn't realize until now that it was just the two of you in the room. But it didn't feel empty until he left. You missed his presence. It's funny how mercurial you are these days. You were completely aware of it. The dust in the air was just adding to your loneliness. You pack your bag and head downstairs. You're trying to list the thing that you had to do once you're home. But you couldn't even come up with one. It's not like anyone was waiting for you at home. You had no idea when your mom would come back from work, your brother is probably at softball practice and your dad doesn't live in the city. Your parents split when you were 14. You completed all your homework during the club period and neither do you have any plans with your friends. Now you were regretting refusing Akashi's offer. I guess he won't mind if I went to watch him play now. You head towards the gym hopefully.
"your reflexes are way too slow to be in this club; this is your last warning get it together" Akashi yelled at a first-year.
You stood frozen at the gym entrance as if Akashi was shouting at you. 'I think I've seen enough red flags today or should I say heard' you mummer to yourself. You slowly turn around trying your best to be invisible. But of course, you can't escape his eyes. He saw you again. Deja vu I guess.
"y/n stop right there" Akashi instructed you in a monotone pitch.
You followed his command and didn't move a muscle. Walking towards you he said "I thought you were going home" in a much friendlier tone this time.
"well I didn't really have anything to do at home so I thought I'd take up your offer," you said turning around to face him. You could feel all the club members gaping at you two. Analyzing your movements. This made you anxious.
"oh so why are you standing here go take a seat on the bleachers" he stated giving you a soft smile. "we'll be done soon then I'll drop you home"
You nod and say"okay cool" then walk up to the bleachers and take a seat away from the group of girls who were here from before.
One of the girls from that group comes and sits next to you.
"Hi! I'm Kim" her voice is stretchy it's kinda hot actually.
"hey I'm y/n"
"You dropped by earlier right?" she asked with sparkled puppy eyes begging you to say yes.
"Yeah, why?" you confirmed, embarrassed wondering who else saw you heading for the hills.
"Oh so are you guys dating?" she asked placing both her hands on her cheeks. Her eyes still sparkling.
"Sorry to disappoint you no we're not," you said without hesitating. Her face fell she was really rooting for you two.
"You know when you fled all flustered earlier, Akashi busted out laughing which was a rare sight to see, well everyone else started laughing too after him now you're kinda famous around here" she pouted.
Whatttttt???? you didn't know how to feel about this. At least he came looking for me you reassured yourself. "oh is that so... hehe" you replied, tucking stray strands behind your ear. "So who are you here for?"
"I'm waiting for my boyfriend Kotaro Hayama there number 7," she said pointing towards a Blondy with lightning-fast speed and Dracula teeth.
"ahh, he's fast" you exclaimed at the sight of his quick moves. Kim invites you to sit with the other girls on the other side of the gym but you refuse saying "some other time maybe".
It's 6:30 they are finally done. Akashi comes up to you to say that he's going to grab his stuff from the locker room and will be back in a minute. You wait for him in the corridor outside the gym. After a while, he came out looking like a fresh breezy summer morning. And you on the other hand look trash like everyone does after school.
"Wanna split a double-stick popsicle?" he asks with glittery eyes. You of course couldn't refuse. "Sure but if you don't split it equally I'll be taking the bigger half". He lets out a chuckle "fine I'll let you have the bigger one".
