Rui when he was a weak, young boy with black hair and dark blue eyes, was watching the boys around his age throwing snowballs at each other. But as he took a few steps to them, he fell to the frozen ground and coughed loudly. He moved to face the bright sky and let out a breath.
"Rui! Rui! Rui!" His mother came into his view as she looked down at him and shook his body. "What are you doing? You know you're not supposed to be outside!"

Rui came back home and sat on his futon with the door opening on his side.
"I was always very frail ever since I was born."
His body was covered with a warm blanket and his dark red haori was over his shoulders.
"I'd never even run. Just walking was a struggle."
His head turned to see a man standing at the engawa in front of him, towering over his small frame. He wore a loose-fitting tuxedo and a white half-cloak over it.
"Until Muzan-sama appeared."
The man raised his face and opened his eyes, revealing his slit plum-red orbs. "You pitiful thing. Let me save you."

"My parents weren't happy about it. Because now that I'd acquired a strong body, I could never expose myself to sunlight, and I had to devour humans."
Rui's father opened the shoji door before he gasped to see a human corpse in Rui's room. "What have you done?! What on earth have you done?! Rui!"
Rui watched his mother weeping behind his father with hands covering her face. His face was blank and emotionless.

"Long ago, I heard a wonderful story. There was once a father who died trying to save his drowning child."
A boy was crying on his father's dead body, his family was mourning over his death.
"I was deeply moved. Such astounding parental love. And such a bond, as well. This father who drowned in the river had fulfilled his role as a parent."

"Muzan-sama also told me about his wife's story."
Rui sat on the engawa outside of his house after he got transformed into a demon by Muzan. Muzan stood beside him as they both looked at the view of the night.
"When he was away and left her and their daughter in their house, a demon slayer came in and killed her. She died protecting her child until her last breath. Her story had very moved me a lot."
