Luke was used to leaving behind everything when he left for tour. Or to visit his family. It was to be expected that he would have to say goodbye.
There were some goodbyes that were easy. But, there were others that nearly impossible. And saying goodbye to Grace was impossible; unbearable.
"You have to go? Already? You just got back." Grace told him in a broken whisper.
"I know. I'm so sorry. But, I'll be back soon. I promise. You know I could never stay away from you. I love you too much." He said.
"I don't want you to go."
"I don't want to go."
Luke kissed her forehead. They were saying goodbye at the airport. Luke looked her in the eyes and gave her a gift. He told her she couldn't open it till she got home.
Grace couldn't stop the tears that flowed from her eyes when they finally closed the plane door. She could tell that Luke was barely keeping it all inside. How could he? When he was leaving her behind?
Grace was numb the whole ride home. The gift that Luke had given her was heavy in her arms. She didn't want to open it. It would hurt too much.
She stepped inside the door and dropped to the floor. Her knees had gave way, she pulled them to her chest. She was still crying.
With numb fingers she reached for the package. She closed her eyes and tore off the brown packaging. She took in the item in front of her.
It was a framed picture of the both of them. They were staring at each other, smiles lighting up their faces. Luke held her close to his chest. Grace couldn't stop laughing.
She read the letter:
Wherever you go, go with all of your heart. Be careful babe. You have my heart with you. Take care of it. I've left it with you.
While I'm gone, go on an adventure. Live your own adventure. And when I'm back home?
We'll go on one together.
