*Finral's POV*
It's the day of the selection exam and I'm standing in front of the base waiting for the captain as I do every year.
"Captain Yami! We really have to go!"
"Who do you think you're ordering around?" Yami asks, emerging from the base surrounded by a dark aura. "Open the portal already, or do you want us to be late?"
I open the portal and shake my head as his back is turned.
That's Captain Yami for you. I think.
Having arrived in the town where the exams take place - Kikka - we take our places in the colosseum. If I had to make a guess I'd say there are about 300 participants at least. The mixture of different manas is crazy. The exam starts and the display of magic is phenomenal, all the different types of magic you can think of were there; fire, water, flower, lightning, wind. Even rare attributes could be seen; I spotted a few, and definitely missed others. By the time the battles had started it was early afternoon. I'm surprised as the last pair steps up, a brown-haired boy and a familiar orange-haired girl, because I can't sense any mana at all from the girl. She reaches under her magenta jumpsuit and taps on what I think is a necklace. Suddenly I can feel an overwhelming amount of mana coming from her.
A magic object to suppress mana? But why?
The fight continues and I watch, enthralled. Neither has an advantage over the other, and despite this the boy clearly rapidly becomes more tired while the girl seems to have a lot of energy left.
"Flower Magic: Flora's Revenge!" She cries out, finally knocking out her opponent.
Wow, she's really powerful and pretty. With that much mana, I wouldn't be surprised if she went to the Golden Dawn. That's a shame, I would've liked to get to know her. Especially since she's so cute.
I start paying more attention, so that I can see which squad she ends up in, but I don't see her again.
About half an hour later I'm standing just outside the colosseum, waiting for Captain Yami to finish on the toilet, when I could feel someone tap on my shoulder. I turn around to see the ginger girl from the exams."Hey, Finral. It's been a while," she greets me, cheerily.
I must've looked really confused, so she continues with a questioning undertone:
"We saw each other once or twice at the noble events?"
That explains the giant amount of mana, I guess… I think.
"Sorry, it's been about a decade since I showed my face at one of those," I say, placing my hand on the back of my neck and giving her a closed eye smile.
"You do seem familiar though?" I continue, not wanting to offend her."Right, uhh, well, I'm Melody."
"Melody?? Woah, I would never have guessed, you look so….different."
I think back to one of the events we had attended when we were younger. The Melody I had met then always wore dresses and little bows in her shoulder-length hair. Before me now stood a girl with hair that falls to just below her chest and clad in a long sleeved, strapless jumpsuit.
"So what happened to your hair?"
"I changed it for the Royal Knights to motivate myself."
"Interesting…" she says, suppressing a laugh.
"The green suits you but why the windswept look?""I thought it was a good idea at the time."
"I think it looks cool, it suits you."
"Yeah, yeah."
"I'm serious!"
"You almost laughed."
"That's only because the reason surprised me, not because of the style. Good job having the guts to do something so drastic to your hair. What would you have done if it had looked bad?"
"I never really thought about it, but I guess I would've left the green in and kept the rest the way it was," I shrug.
"You really rock it though, it would look horrible on me."
"By the way I believe Langris is over there," I point over to where my half-brother is standing, seemingly looking for someone.
"I try to avoid him at all costs, I find him horrid," she giggles slightly whilst politely covering her mouth with her hand.
"Well it looks like they're about to leave, so you might want to go join them."
"Why?" Melody asks, looking genuinely confused.
"Well….I assumed you got into the Golden Dawn."
"I actually got picked by multiple squads, including the Golden Dawn."
"Which ones?"
"The Black Bulls, The Golden Dawn, The Coral Peacocks and The Blue Roses."
"I'm not surprised, your magic display really was something. Which one did you pick?"
She obviously picked the Golden Dawn, I mean who wouldn't?"I picked the Black Bulls," she replies matter-of-factly.
"You chose the Black Bulls over the Golden Dawn?" I ask, incredulous.
"Well yeah, I don't really like the idea of being stuck with a bunch of snobs every day for the rest of my life."
"I always admired your brutal honesty," I say, closing my eyes, shaking my head and letting out a slight chuckle.
"You should've seen Langris' face when I made my decision, it was hilarious."
Just then Captain Yami joins us as we're laughing about Langris.
"I see you've met our new member, Finral."
"I….actually met her before at a few events we attended when we were younger," I explain.
"She doesn't seem to hate you, so you managed to refrain from flirting with her?" Captain Yami asks with a grin.
"O-of course not! I know her already, it's completely different."
"If you say so," Captain Yami shrugs off the topic.
"Now open the portal already, goddamnit.""Right…"
I open it and Captain Yami goes through immediately leaving us behind.
"Well, if it isn't my useless older brother," an all too familiar voice says from behind me.
"Oh bog off, Langris," Melody pipes up, quickly taking action, grabbing my hand and pulling me through my own portal.
Another two hours go by, in which Melody completes Magna's unofficial ritual and (somehow) gets shown around the base by Vanessa, our resident alcoholic.
