"Now you understand that tonight is very important," my father aforementioned with a mouthful of blueberry scone, the buttery crumbs adrift in his silver beard.
I giggled, "Yes Father, I have the list," I smiled and reached over the marble counter to wipe his face. Jackie scurried about the kitchen, her azure eyes wide, and tied her hair in a golden knot. Even though we had managed to purchase breakfast, she was still scrambled as if she had baked the whole meal from scratch.
It had been a week since I had my encounter with him on the yacht, and in the meantime I had been occupying myself with busywork and errands to distract my romantic affections and thoughts towards him. Yet his perplexing ways seemed to be nagging at me each and every moment.
Right now, my main task was to get all of the groceries and assorted items for a dinner party my father decided to throw together at the last minute. Musicians, I thought to myself humorously.
"Sofia did you hear me?" My father questioned after taking a large gulp of coffee and a bite of his banana.
I nearly knocked over my mug of warm milk, the ivory liquid sloshing over its clay edge,"Um yes sorry," I replied and smiled bashfully.
"Okay, the guests will be arriving around 8 o'clock so make sure you get everything by 2 so we have ample time for preparation," he smiled and passed me a napkin.
"Consider it done," I answered and wiped up my dairy disarray, walking outside to begin my journey to the marketplace.
Wayfarer sunglasses atop the bridge of my nose, I eagerly peered at the rainbow of carts that spread across the expanse of the cobblestone streets. Grabbing the crumbled up list out of my straw basket, I read the scribbled writing that illustrated my initial task.
20 ripened tomatoes
Sounded simple enough, I thought to myself with a small shrug. Spotting a wooden wagon with a crimson and cream striped overhang, the classic fabric providing shade for the variety of vegetables that laid beneath it, I bounded to complete my first conquest.
Once I arrived at the quaint cart, I scoured its abundance of vegetables and botany. It was purely magnificent to think that all of this could have come from a tiny and minuscule seed. I picked up a bunch of herbs and inhaled deeply.
"Can I help you find anything?" The cart owner asked politely.
I blushed and set the herbs down, refocusing on my mission,"Yes actually, I need 20 ripe tomatoes. Do you have any?"
He nodded and gestured to a cart filled with the cerise fruit, the large orbs of produce stacked neatly in rows. I thanked him and strolled over to it taking out a brown paper bag, unfolded its creases, and carefully picked out the finest ones I saw. After paying the man I continued along, checking off each chore until finally, I was done.
With an exhausted sigh, I wiped off my forehead, diminishing the beads of sweat that had sat upon it due to running around. I wandered back home, dreading the party that would take place later on in my home. I was never one for socializing around a mass of people. Chatter was always something I had never been good at and it was also something that was essential for a soirée of the sorts. A soirée that my Father just had to force me to go to. How could I say no to his vigor let alone the guilt Jackie would put on me for being antisocial?
In the end I was going to have to suck it up and deal with the events that were to come. The Clementine estate never had a dull moment, which was a blessing and a curse in itself.
