Chapter 5
Monster After Monster

Volume 1: The Lightning Thief

"Our little Pat, off on a quest," Selina cooed, "Making a name for Aphrodite kids."

Pat scoffed at that. As he put his toiletries into a backpack, he said, "Name me one other Aphrodite kid who would want to go on a quest. We sit out of Capture the Flag for a reason."

"A very good reason," She was nodding, he could tell, "Don't let the monsters chip your nails."

Pat smiled slightly. It was sweet of her to come to help him pack. The whole cabin would say goodbye, no doubt. Because of his mother's blatant disregard for him, he often forgot some people cared about him aside from his father.

"If I get brutally murdered by monsters--" Pat started.

"Now, don't you dare," Selina sighed, "You have a Big Three kid with you, you'll be alright!"

"We're going to visit Hades," Pat deadpanned, "Look, I just want to say thanks, okay? You're a great big sister."

Selina made a loud sound like her heart was melting, "Aww, Pat. I'll see you in a week, no longer okay!" She grinned, "Come hug me!"

"The summer solstice is in ten days, not seven, so you might have to wait," Pat corrected her, but opened his arms and squeezed her when she hugged him.

They walked to the bottom of Half-Blood Hill together with the rest of Aphrodite cabin, and Chiron finished off his bag with a canteen of nectar and a Ziploc bag full of ambrosia squares, only to be used in emergencies if he was seriously hurt.

Annabeth, Percy, and Grover were all there with their bags ready. Grover's fake feet were on considering Pat couldn't hear any hoof clomping, and judging from the clinking sound his bag made, he had brought cans to eat on the journey. Pat was glad Annabeth was bringing one of her architecture books too. Her reading was always entertaining.

Pat's siblings hugged him and Annabeth's gave her battle advice. All of the campers left before Chiron started his speech -- all except Luke, at least, who came running down the hill and yelling, "Hey! Glad I caught you."

"Just wanted to say good luck," Luke told Percy. "And I thought...um, maybe you could use these."

Pat wheeled back and forth on his feet, "Luke," He said.

"Oh, it's a pair of shoes!" Luke said helpfully, "Here--Maia!" He called, and a fluttering noise filled the air, "They grow wings."

"Awesome!" Grover said.

Luke smiled. "Those served me well when I was on my quest. Gift from Dad. Of course, I don't use them much these days...." His voice turned sad.

"Hey, man," Percy said. "Thanks."

"Listen, Percy..." Luke sounded uncomfortable. "A lot of hopes are riding on you. So just...kill some monsters for me, okay?"

Percy and Luke shook hands. Luke patted Grover's head between his horns, then gave a good-bye hug to Annabeth, and he patted...Pat's shoulder. No pun intended.

After Luke was gone, Percy told Annabeth, "You're hyperventilating."

"Am not." She said quickly. Too quickly. Pat laughed into his hand.
