"And to my niece and nephew, Maybe. Griffin. I love you two, you're my rocks. We made some mistakes along the way, but I think we turned out ok, I wouldn't trade you two for the world" Chris announced, a glass of Champaine pointed in our direction. I couldn't help but to block out the rest of his speech, annoyed at his lie.
He would trade us for the world, his world. The day after the dance, Chris sat Griffin and I down, explaining how he met a woman named Ann while working in Denver. Apparently, they had been dating for almost two years, living with her when he wasn't with us. The news angered me, thinking about all of the times I wished he was home with us. All the times he could have been there to help me with Griffin's mood swings, with my addiction, with everything. The anger quickly changed to gloominess, feeling alone. He really just upped and left us, like our mother.
Ann was his everything, within the short amount of time that they had begun dating, he replaced his priorities. We sat lower on the totem pole, forced to watch him slip away. The regular ice cream dates are now a distant memory, along with the nights we would sit in his room all night to catch each other up on our recent lives. Sure, we were older now and didn't rely on him as much, but he was an emotional crutch to us. He was the only parental figure we've known, and now we had to watch him start his own family. We would soon watch their children live the lives we dreamed of, with Chris as an actual dad. It hurt to watch everything change so sudden, not being able to slow it down. I wanted Chris to be happy, so I never tried to stop him. I always acted out of support, knowing it was his time to get his life back.
"Cheers." He finished, lightly tapping his cup to Ann's. I blinked my eyes, breaking out of my trance as I plastered a fake smile on my face, "cheers." I spoke. I clinked my glass to Griffin's before turning to my left and doing the same to Fezco. He sat next to me, wearing a dark gray suit with a tie to match my dress. He cleaned up well, making it hard to stay in a sour mood. He sipped his drink, shaking his leg up and down as he tired to remain attentive. I reached my hand over, placing it on his bouncing leg to slow it down. He looked to me, giving me a small smile. I gave him as best of a smile as I could, trying to avoid the hole caving into my chest.
Noticing my gloomy mood, Fez put his arm around the back of my chair, letting me lean into him. The comfort was nice, he knew me well. Griffin gave me a closed lip smile. It never reached his eyes, telling me everything I needed to know. Ash sat on the opposite side of him, making fun of weird looking family members. I laughed along at him, appreciating the distraction. I could tell the only reason Griffin was still stable was due to Ash's childish behavior, making me smile at the two friends.
After about a half hour of watching people mingle, we were approached by Chris and Ann.
"Mind if we sit for a small chat?" Ann asked, smiling too nicely. Griffin and I made brief eye contact, silently judging her together. He released a twitch from his eye, expressing his distaste for the woman. I looked back over to them, sloppily pointing with my hand to sit. They took a seat, looking to each other before starting, "I want to thank you two for coming tonight, I know this isn't your scene." Chris spoke, giving us small smiles.
"Of course," I spoke for us, "I'm glad you incorporated Walter in your ceremony," I referred to Ann's family Golden retriever I've grown to love, "he was the best part of the night." I finished with a backhanded compliment. Chris gave me a fake smile with a small head tilt, catching onto my act as it seemed to fly past Ann. The boys sat in silence, watching the passive aggressive conversation.
