(a/n) Thank you for reading! have a lovely day/night. What ships and things would you like to see?
Prompt: "So i was driving past a pet store and couldn't help but wonder how cute an animal would be in our home..."
Bakugou straightened his chopsticks to be perfectly parallel. Drumming his fingers on the table, he checked his phone again. Still no texts from Deku. His boyfriend was unusually late, he should have gotten back 15 minutes ago. Midoriya's shifts ended late on Fridays, sure, but Bakugou had already accounted for that. The spicy curry Bakugou had made was still simmering in the pot, so he didn't have to worry about the food getting cold, but that didn't help his agitation. He was worried about his partner, and that worry was beginning to turn into irritation. Just as he was about to send another text, he heard the telltale sound of their apartment door opening.
"Kacchan! I'm home!" Midoriya shouted, slipping off his shoes. Bakugou stood and fixed him with a glare.
"You're late. Where were you?" Bakugou demanded, watching as his boyfriend set down a large box.
"Aww... was Kacchan worried about me?" Midoriya asked sweetly, his tone mocking.
"You little shit- of course I was worried! What if you'd broken a bone or something? Knowing you, I wouldn't be surprised." Bakugou huffed, kissing Midoriya on the forehead. His boyfriend chuckled in response. Normally, nothing could distract him from the sight of his boyfriend's wide, bright smile. Normally.
The box Midoriya had set down wiggled. Bakugou froze. The box twitched again.
"Deku..." Bakugou trailed off, and instantly Midoriya looked guilty.
"You know how I was late?" Midoriya asked with a sheepish smile, continuing when Bakugou rolled his eyes. "Well... I was driving past a pet store and couldn't help but wonder how cute an animal would be in our home..."
"No." Bakugou cut him off, scoffing disbelievingly "You didn't."
"And I walked in and there was this adorable little fluff ball and he looked at me with these big, pleading eyes, and I just had to..."
"Nope. No. We are not adopting a pet. No way." Bakugou stared at the twitching box, before cautiously poking it with his foot. The top sprung open, and Bakugou was faced with the scraggliest, scrawniest kitten he'd ever seen. It was blond, with stripes across the face and a white belly. Midoriya was right, it had big pleading eyes colored a deep crimson. Bakugou scoffed.
"Take him back." Clearly the pleading eyes hadn't worked on Bakugou, who glared as the kitten tumbled out of the box.
"No! I love him already." Midoriya argued, "Not to mention, the pet store is already closed. We at least have to keep him overnight... though actually-" Midoriya paused as if a sudden thought had hit him, but he didn't elaborate.
The kitten was attacking the shoelace on one of Bakugou's shoes, but when he moved it out of the way, the kitten pounced again. It seemed delighted that the prey was actually moving.
"Actually what?" Bakugou asked, clenching his jaw. They didn't have any of the necessary materials to keep a cat. They didn't have a bed, or food dishes, or toys. Bakugou wasn't even sure their apartment allowed pets.
"Well..." Midoriya seemed hesitant to say, as if he knew whatever he said would only tick Bakugou off more. "It's Friday... the store won't open again until Monday."
Bakugou paused, stunned. For once, he didn't burst out with anger. Instead, he just stood there in shock, the cogs in his head slowly trying to work out Midoriya's meaning.
Midoriya pushed past him to the kitchen, and dished out the curry. "Oh well, that's a shame." The nerd had the audacity to smile, like this wasn't some scheme of his. "That just means you have more time to get attached to him."
—-------
Bakugou was not attached to the kitten. Not in the least. Sure, the thing was cute when it played with bakugou's shoelace. Sure, Bakugou had gotten up and unlaced his boots, dragging the string along the ground until it pounced. And maybe, just maybe, he was starting to care for the little puffball.
He had been planning on hiding his feelings, pretending he didn't like the cat and keeping his pride. He'd enjoyed the 'spontaneous' breakfast in bed Midoriya had made him, clearly his boyfriend's poorly veiled way of trying to butter him up. He'd quickly tucked the shoelace behind his back when Midoriya came in, and grumbled 'Stupid feline' just loud enough for the other to hear.
Bakugou had thought he'd been pretty good at hiding his affection.
All that went out the window when Midoriya came back Sunday afternoon. Midoriya had gone to visit his mother that morning, and Bakugou had stayed in the apartment, playing with the kitten. After playing around on the carpet for some time, the little beast had begun to look sleepy. So Bakugou had done the obvious thing– put the cat on his lap while he sat on the sofa. Bakugou chilled on his phone, scratching his fingers under the kitten's ears. The kitten purred contentedly in response.
One thing had led to another, and the next thing he knew, Bakugou was waking up to the familiar sound of their apartment door opening. He was still drowsy and confused, so it took him a moment to realize the kitten was curled up against him. In that same moment Midoriya took in the way Bakugou had arched around the cat, letting it sleep in the middle of the cushions. He took in the clawed up shoelace on the carpet, and the bag of cat treats Bakugou had bought that morning.
Midoriya gasped in delight. Bakugou shot up, almost sending the small cat flying off the couch in his haste.
"We're keeping him!" Midoriya beamed, shooting over to the now disgruntled cat.
"No. No we're not. That was just..." Bakugou floundered, trying to come up with an excuse. When he couldn't think of any, and when Midoriya and the cat both looked at him with big, pleading eyes, Bakugou finally gave in. "Fine. We can keep him."
Midoriya's smile grew wider. "Yes! Kacchan I love you so much, you're the best."
"I already knew that. I love you too, nerd."
