Before Jake came to town, Camilo was the bright, happy spirit of the village, like sunshine in everyone's life. But everything changed when Jake arrived.
Jake was friendly, charming, and easily won everyone over. He was kind, sweet, and always willing to help the Madrigal family. He and Camilo clicked instantly, and soon Camilo found himself falling for Jake. They started dating, and at first, everything was amazing.
Camilo was happy, maybe too happy.
Jake's mood changed more and more each day. But over time, the cracks began to show.
It started with little things, Jake getting annoyed when Camilo forgot something, or snapping if things didn't go his way. Camilo tried to ignore it, telling himself Jake was just tired or stressed. But inside, he felt the something grow.
One night, after a small argument, Jake's voice got louder, and he got really close to Camilo, like he might hit him. Camilo froze, feeling scared for the first time. But then Jake would step back, hug him, and apologize, promising it wouldn't happen again.
But it did.
Jake didn't smile as much anymore. Instead, there was cold silence and angry looks. When things went wrong, Jake's temper would flare up fast—he would say mean things or grab Camilo too hard. It made Camilo jump and feel scared.
Camilo started watching Jake all the time, afraid to say or do the wrong thing. He felt like he was walking on broken glass, hoping to find a moment of peace, but never knowing when the next storm would come.
Camilo's world got smaller every day. The happy, bright boy he used to be started to hide behind walls of fear and silence. He stopped sharing what he felt and kept it all inside.
At school, he smiled more than before, but it was just a mask. No one knew how heavy his heart was. The nights were the hardest—when Jake was around, Camilo never knew if Jake would be kind or angry next.
Sometimes, when Jake wasn't looking, Camilo would touch the bruises on his skin and wonder how things got so bad. He wanted to believe Jake would change, and that things would be good again like before. But every time Jake shouted or raised his hand, that hope got smaller.
Dolores noticed Camilo was different. She saw how he flinched when Jake got close and how he tried to act normal, even when he was hurting inside. She wanted to help, but Camilo kept his distance, scared of what might happen if he said anything.
Deep down, Camilo wished someone would notice and help him—help him with the anger, the fear, and the lonely feelings inside.
Despite everything, there was one night that stood out—a Friday night, when Camilo thought he might finally get a break. He was in his room, feeling relieved that he could stay home and have some peace away from Jake. For once, he allowed himself to feel happy, imagining a quiet evening just for himself.
But then Mirabel called him into her room, and everything changed. She told him that their mom had invited Jake's family over for dinner. The hope for a peaceful night vanished instantly. Camilo's heart sank—there was no way to escape Jake tonight.
Camilo's POV:
As soon as Mirabel finished speaking, I stormed into my room and slammed the door shut. I flopped down on my bed, feeling a mix of frustration and dread. I didn't want to see Jake tonight not after everything. But deep down, I knew there was no avoiding him.
I sighed and slowly got up, trying to push the knot of anxiety away. I got ready, my mind racing with every possible way this night could go wrong.
Just as I finished, I heard a knock on my door. My heart thumped wildly. What if it was Jake? I took a deep breath, steeling myself, and unlocked the door.
