Chapter 15: For The Greater Good

You awoke to see Mother Miranda carrying you into a room you haven't seen before. "Well now that you're awake you can walk by yourself" she said and dropped you onto the ground. You groan and stand up as she takes you by your neck. She goes over to some sort of cell and looks in it saying "I've brought you a visitor". She then opens it and throws you inside. You hit the wall and wince and grab at your shoulder. You look up and as Mother Miranda is about to leave you push yourself up and walk over to her and grab her collar. "I will get you back, you bitch!" you said as she removed your arm from her. "Now now y/n, no need to be so aggressive" she replies and then walks away. You kick the cell and put your head down. Not even aware of someone else's presence in the cell with you. "Y...y/n?" you hear the person ask and you jump a little. "Uh yeah? Sorry I didn't know there was someone else in here. It's kinda dark, I can't really see you. Who are you?" you ask them. "Y/n is it really you!?" you hear the person ask. You then recognize that voice, it was hard at first but you do and your eyes shoot wide open. Then as you suspect your mom walks out from the shadows and towards you. She looks at you and then hugs you. You stand there stunned but hug her back. "Is it really you?" you ask, whispering. You can hear her crying and she answers "it's really me". You hug her more tightly now and begin to cry a little. "I watched you die.." you whisper. "I know it's confusing but I'm here" she says and pulls back, looking at you. She grabs your hand and leads you to the wall and sits down with you. She notices your wounds and how tired you look. "What happened?" she asks you and caresses your cheek. You take a deep breath and then explain "we were having dinner, Rose was sleeping upstairs. You...Mother Miranda was fighting with dad about Louisiana and then boom. Bullet in the shoulder, and then bullets everywhere. We went through hell to get Rose back. B..but dad, he, fuck!". You put your head in your hands and cry. "Dad what..?" your mom asks in a whisper. You shake your head and say "he's gone...". Your mom stands up and starts to pace. "No, it's not possible. He...he can't die" she says. "I watched her rip his heart out of his chest and squeeze it to blood!" you say and look up. You sigh and look down saying "it should've been me". "What?" your mom asks stunned and then comes over to kneel in front of you. "Y/n m/n Winters you take that back right now" she says. You look up to her as a tear streams down your face and say "I don't feel like I deserve anything. I don't feel like you want me anyway". "Just because we had Rose?" she asks. "She feels like your real kid, not me. I don't belong" you shrug. Your mom pulls you onto her lap and hugs you tight like she used to do when you were a kid. "I don't want to hear you say that again. It's not true, I understand it's hard having a new sibling in the house and I understand it took more of my attention away but it does not mean you don't belong or that I don't want you. I'll always love you" she says and tears up a little. You calmed down and sat there for a little while, talking, until you heard footsteps. You get closer to the cell door and see Chris. "Chris!" you call out and rattle the door. "Y/n? Is that you?" he asks and comes closer. "Can you open the door?" you ask and move backwards giving him room to. He uses his heavy boots to kick down the cell and you climb over parts of the cell still attached. When your mom climbs over after you Chris aims his gun at her. "Umber Eyes, this is Alpha. Where is Miranda right now?" Chris asks as you look between the gun and your mom. The soldier on the other line says "still at the ceremony site. Whatever she's doing, she's staying put". Chris lowers his gun and you let out a breath you didn't know you were holding. "Goddamn. It really is you. I'm glad you're safe, Mia. Why are you here?" he asks. You stand a little off to the side, listening as your mom answers "I was caught...and used in experiments...". The soldier on the other line says "wait, did you say Mia? Mia Winters?". "In the flesh. What's the situation up there?" Chris asks. "Kind of a war going on. Nothing we can't handle" the soldier answers. "Don't get distracted. Stick to the mission. I'm headed to the ceremony site" Chris answers and starts to walk to the exit. "Wait! You can't leave us here! You promised, dammit! You said you'd keep us safe! We did everything you asked. We moved over here, everything! And I didn't care, so long as we were together! So you tell me, where is my husband? Where is my daughter!?" your mom said frantically. You made eye contact with Chris and said "mom, I...I already told you. Dad he's...he's gone". "I couldn't save him. But I can save Rose" Chris said. Just then everything started shaking and Chris said "come on, it's not safe here after all". "N-no you don't understand! He can't be dead" your mom says. "I'm sorry, Mia, but we have to leave. We have to destroy this village" Chris replies. You pinch the bridge of your nose trying to calm yourself down. "No! You're wrong... I tried to keep this a secret, but... You don't understand how special he is" your mom says leaving you confused. Everything begins to shake again and you decide enough is enough. You slipped by your mom, swiftly grabbed the pistol out of Chris's holster and ran towards the exit. "Y/n!" your mom yells. "I'm sorry! I have to do this!" you yell and run off towards the ceremony site. You dodge past lycans and run until your whole body burns but you make it. You're startled when you see the Dukes cart come to a stop in front of you. Out of his cart stumbles your dad, he stands up and you both make eye contact. "I don't know how you're here, but let's do this together" you say and tear up. Your dad nods and gives you a quick hug. You walk side by side, through rubble and moving trees. Your dad gives you his grenade launcher for protection. You run past enemies and a big bunch of black moving goopy trees. You help your dad push them aside to create a pathway. As you make your way inside you hear and see Miranda. "Ah, little Eva! My beautiful daughter! Come to me. Eva, is that you? Oh how I've missed you" Miranda says and picks up a baby. You then see that the baby is still Rose, which throws Miranda off guard "--What?". She then starts to cry black tears and says "my power is leaving me!". Your dad screams "Rose!". You both walk over to her and point your pistols at her, "Miranda!" your dad yells. She turns around and says "interesting, your body certainly isn't normal". "Give Rose to me! Now!" your dad yells at her. "You will see. Once I kill you properly, every--" she begins to say but gets shot and stunned. You hear someone who you think is Chris yell to your dad to grab Rose and he does just that. Miranda grapples on to them and you say "let go!" and try to push her off of them. She grabs your wrist and twist it as she says "I've spent a lifetime creating this moment...and you try to take it away from me? I will take what is due". She pushes your dad in one direction and you in another. She grabs Rose and places her somewhere you can't see. "My desires will be fulfilled! Rose is mine!" she says and transforms into, well into something fucked up. You stand up and make eye contact with your dad, you get a determined look on your face and nod. You don't let her continue her speech and you rush flame rounds into her back. You both quickly realize her patterns and act accordingly. The fight is drawing on and you're becoming tired, you need something that will give her one last good punch. Your dad distracts her and he looks to you and says "y/n, here! You can do it!". He then passes you explosive rounds, you catch it and quickly reload the gun with it. You get two hits on her before she attacks you. One of her branches pierces into your abdomen but your dad defeats her before she can kill you. You lay on the ground, clutching your wound as you look on at Miranda. "My daughter... My Eva!" she says and then takes her last breath. Everything starts to crumble apart and your dad grabs Rose. "Y/n, are...are you--" he begins to say but then you look and see his hand crumble like stone. You see him fall to his knees still holding Rose as she begins to cry. You grit your teeth and use any energy and strength you have to crawl over to your dad. You grab his shoulder and close your eyes, realizing that his good luck is coming to an end. Tears stream down your face as you hear Chris rush in. "Ethan! Y/n!" he says and you open your eyes. You watch as Chris tries to shake your dad awake "Come on, Ethan. Come on, Ethan, wake up!". "Chris" your dad mumbles. "Ethan, you did it! It's finished" Chris says out of breath. "I think we finished each other..." your dad manages to say. "Ethan, y/n, we've gotta move" Chris says and picks your dad on to his feet. "Go without me, I'm going to bleed out" you say and stay where you are. "N..no not you too!" Chris says and looks back at you. "Y/n! Get up right now! Enough of this sob story okay!? You get up and you fight for your life. You live for your dad, you live for everyone who has protected you and died doing so! Get. Up." Chris says, trying to motivate you. You think back on everything you've been through. Louisiana and how all of those peoples lives were ruined. The four lords, the entire village, even Miranda. You want to live. So you fight. You get on the other side of your dad, clutching your wound with one hand and holding your dad up with every last bit of strength, with your other. "Keep moving! There's a bomb in that thing that'll blow this whole village sky-high! When I hit this trigger, we can't be anywhere near it!" Chris says as you make your way across the bridge. Your dad stops moving and you know this is where you part ways. "Dammit, Mia's waiting for you! She's alive, you hear me? Alive!" Chris tries. "Mia...? I'm so sorry... I love you... Keep Rose safe..." your dad says. Your dad starts to fall and Chris tries to keep him up. You move so you're standing in front of him. You grab your dad's shoulder and for the final time say "I love you dad". "I...love...you...too" your dad breathes out. Your dad gives Rose to Chris and stumbles back a little. "You tell her yourself. Now come on, it's not that much further!" Chris says, basically pleading at this point. Your dad puts his jacket on Rose and looks to you. "Watch over her. Teach her to be strong..." he says to you. "I will" you whisper. The goop and branches then come toward your dad, he grabs the detonator and pushes Chris backwards. "Goodbye, Rosemary. Goodbye, y/n" your dad says and then goes silent. You no longer feel his presence and you lose your strength, collapsing to the ground. Chris sees you and runs over to you, picking you up on to your feet and practically dragging you to the getaway plane. "I won't lose you too" Chris says through gritted teeth. You fight to stay awake as you hear your mom's voice. "Rose! Y/n!" you hear her say. You open your eyes to see your mom holding Rose. "Go. Go! Take us up, now!" Chris says and brings you to a bench, laying you down. He grabs a first aid kid and you hear your mom start to panic, "Wait! Where's Ethan!?". She then comes over to you and starts to cry, "y/n" she whispers. "Get moving. We have to get clear" you hear Chris say. Your mom plants a kiss on your forehead and then goes over to Chris and says "no. We can't go! Not without my husband!". "Mia, sit down and strap in" Chris says coldly. "Not before you tell me where Ethan is. I know he wouldn't abandon us! Tell me what's going on! Where--" she yells. You then groan in pain as the plane shakes, you know the village is blown up. You start to fade in and out of consciousness. The conversation between Chris and your mom starts to get jumbled up. You make a noise and move your hand outwards, hoping your mom will notice you. She turns around and comes over to you, kneeling down and caressing your cheek. She looks down at Rose and then places her forehead to yours. "I won't lose you too, please fight. Please, y/n. I love you" is the last thing you hear before falling into darkness. You're now in your head, talking to yourself, to your body. You tell yourself you want to live, that you want to survive. You're not ready to go yet. You push yourself to open your eyes and when you do, you're in a hospital room. Not a normal one though, one where Chris works. You recognize the symbol. You look over as you hear a door. You lock eyes with your mom. "You fought" she whispers as tears stream down her face. She comes over to you and leans down hugging you, you hug her back and say "I love you mom". She rubs your back and says "I love you too sweet boy". Your mom stays by your bed and ends up passing out in the chair a few hours later. You quietly stand up and wobbily make your way into the hallway. You look across the hall into a room and see Rose asleep in a crib. You pick her up and sit down in the chair next to the crib. You see your dad's jacket and wrap her in it. You stare down at her as a tear falls down your face. "I guess it's you and me now kid" you whisper. "I haven't been the best big brother, but I will be now. For you, for mom, and for dad. I'll make him proud" you continue. You put Rose back in her crib and make your way to your bed. "I'll find my purpose dad, I'll help anyone that I can so they don't end up like us. I'll help just like Chris does. I'm sorry I couldn't save you, but I won't fail again. I love you" you whisper out, hoping wherever he is, he can hear you. You take one last look at your mom and then close your eyes, letting sleep overcome you.
