The following morning, Strider leads the four hobbits and Silveria along with a newly acquired pony away from the village of Bree. Silveria goes in the lead along with Strider. Strider sometimes talks in quiet tones to her, and she picks it up early. "How come an elleth have accompanied a band of hobbits?" Strider aks suddenly, and your smile. "It was a friend of mine's idea, but I also wanted an adventure." Strider hums in understanding and is quiet. That's until Frodo speaks up. "Where are you taking us?" He says. "Into the wild," Strider answers short.

"How do we know this Strider is a friend of Gandalf?" You hear Merry say to Frodo, whose answer makes you smile. "I think a servant of the Enemy would look fairer and feel fouler." "He's foul enough!" "We have no choice but to trust him."

"But where is he leading us?" Sam ask. "To Rivendell, Master Gamgee. To the House of Elrond." Strider says, and my smile even more as I hear Sam's excited expression. "Did you hear that? Rivendell! We're going to see the Elves!" The Hobbits pause, pulling cookware and food from their packs. Strider and I look back at them. "Gentlemen, we do not stop 'till nightfall," Strider says, and I place a hand on his shoulder, making him turn his gray eyes to mine. "They have more meals than us, Mellon. It's how they are." Strider doesn't say anything and walks away.

I snicker to myself as I hear Metry snd Pippin talk. "Don't think he knows about second breakfast Pip," Merry says, making pippin look at him. "What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about them, doesn't he?" Merry shakes his head and says, "I wouldn't count on it." From over the bushes, Strider tosses an apple, and Merry catches it. He hands it to Pippin and pats him on the shoulder. Another apple flies through the air, hitting Pippin in the head. He looks up bewildered.

I chukle. "Pippin!" Merry scolds.

The party slowly make their way through increasingly rough country. It becomes darker, and the forest gives way to flat marshland. All go up to their knees in the sludgy mire. The conditions are made worse by an army of midges that attack them unmercifully. Merry slaps despairingly at the cloud of pests hovering around him. You're unfazed by the insects and stride thru the mire. "What do they eat — when they can't get Hobbit?" Merry ex, and Behind him, Pippin stumbles and falls into the mud.

You make camp for the night. Strider manages to kill a deer which he brings back for your rations. The Moon rises as the hobbits fall asleep. Strider keeps watching by the fire. He hums a tune softly. You also sit awake; being a dragon, you don't need much sleep.

Strider's song:

"Tinúviel elvanui,
Elleth alfirin ethelhael
O hon ring finnil fuinui
A renc gelebrin thiliol."

(Tinúviel the elven-fair,
Immortal maiden elven-wise,
About him cast her night-dark hair,
And arms like silver glimmering.)
