"Why couldn't I have rode with Lore? She actually pays attention to me." Bode complained from the back seat to Matheson, Massachusetts from Seattle.
"Yeah, why couldn't we ride with her? She would've made this a lot more fun." Kinsey added.
"She has most of the leftover boxes in her car. She couldn't have fit all of you. Besides, she's not heading straight to key house." Nina informed.
"Let's play a game then." Bode offered.
"Bode, no." Kinsey shut him down.
"We can play I saw a monster Umm or Whack a Bode or serious question!" Bode suggested, enthusiastically.
"No whack a Bode in the car." Nina turned down.
"Okay. Serious questions then. Serious question: if you had to lose one sense, what would it be?"
"Right now, my sense of hearing." Kinsey asked sarcastically.
"It's a serious question." Bode gave her a look.
"Pass." Kinsey shrugged off.
"Boring, Tyler? Tyler~Tyler!" Bode kicked his older brother's seat.
"One more time and G.I. Joe loses an arm." Tyler turned to look at Bode before turning back to his original position.
"I think that's the first thing you've said since Ohio." Nina smiled.
"I said something in Ohio?"
"Yeah, you said oh look we're in Ohio."
"Oh. I was right."
"Now I have a serious question. What would you be doing if we were still in Seattle?" Nina asked.
"I'd either be playing Fortnite with Stuart and Wyatt or I'd be playing Fortnite with Stuart and Chase." Bode answered.
"What would you be doing Ty?"
"I would be on the French club ski trip with Sarah Johnson." He smirked.
"You took Spanish." Nina puzzled.
"Why isn't anyone playing for real?" Bode groaned.
"Definitely wouldn't wanna lose my sense of smell. Smell is tied to memory. When your father I would sell a house, we'd grind up a lemon in the garbage disposal per Lore's idea. Covers the smell of the paint. No one likes the smell of pain, but everyone has a good memory of a lemon." Nina reminisced with a light grin.
"Lore likes lemons, specifically lemon candles." Bode put it.
"You're right Bode. She does." Nina nodded.
"Where's she going?" Kinsey asked.
"To see a friend." Nina's smile fell.A blue Honda Accord pulled up in front of McClellan Psychiatric Hospital. Lorelei stepped out of the vehicle and looked at the building longingly. She sighed as she shut her door and made her way into the establishment. She walked to the front desk with dread. The receptionist looked up and greeted her.
"Hello. How can I help you?" Lorelei could tell her eyes kept drifting to the large scar on her cheek.
"I'm here to visit Erin Voss. My name is Lorelei Locke." The receptionist's eyes widened slightly.
"Locke? I'm terribly sorry for your loss." The receptionist displayed her condolences.
"Thanks. So Erin Voss?" Lorelei shrugged her off.The receptionist smiled sadly and gave her Erin's room number. Lorelei made her way down the hallway. She knocked before entering. She saw an older woman in a wheelchair by the window. Lorelei took a deep breath before going to stand beside Erin. She examined Erin and was happy to find she mainly took after her father.
"Erin?" Lorelei spoke. "I'm Lorelei Locke, Rendell's daughter...Your daughter." Lorelei watched for any reaction but saw none. "I know you don't know me, but I would like to know you. You're my birth mom. I'm sorry it took so long for me to visit. It's just...I was happy...in Seattle. Rendell's dead. I wanted to see my mom, at least once." Lorelei looked for any response. Her eyes became slightly teary. "So you won't even talk to your daughter? Or even look at me?" Her voice broke. She pointed her eyes upward and blinked away the tears. "Fine. I'm leaving." Lorelei waltzed out of the room and out of the establishment. The receptionist knew who she was and just sighed, watching her leave.Lorelei got in her car and drove off. She parked on the side of a random road and leaned back on her seat. She took a shaky breath and closed her eyes. She could feel her eyes getting watery. She banged her fist on the steering wheel. She held her breath as she pulled up her sleeve and used the rubber band on her wrist to flick harshly against her skin.
She typically wore long sleeves to hide the bruising and now that they live in Matheson, no one would question her clothing choices. Bruises weren't permanent, they faded but the pain she held wouldn't. She started her car back up after taking a minute to gather herself and made her way into town.
