It's late at night, and Adrien can't sleep.
Maybe that's because his house is currently occupied by three utterly insane people who could kill him on a whim. Insane... that's not the right word. None of them are insane, save for Mista, maybe. The other two were clearly intelligent. But maybe that's worse than being insane.
They just had to sleep over. Partly Adrien's fault, because he did break a window in their hotel room, which therefore meant that they couldn't stay at that hotel. But that doesn't mean that they should stay over in the Agreste mansion!
He wanders over to his kitchen. Technically, he wasn't allowed to have midnight snacks, but at this moment Adrien didn't care. Last night, he'd left his portion of Boeuf Bourguignon largely untouched. He's hungry. Boeuf Bourguignon is kind of gross.
There's not much in the refrigerator, so Adrien scrounges around in the pantry for a while, finding a chocolate croissant and biting into it. Must've been from the Dupain bakery. Fresh and delicious, although it still carries an association with Marinette, and therefore tastes oddly bitter to Adrien. He still eats it though. It's been a while since he's had a treat like this.
Since he holds the cat miraculous, Adrien's senses are all heightened. No need to turn on the kitchen light; he's got night vision, baby! And if someone were to try and sneak up on him, Adrien would hear it.
When he hears footsteps pad down the hallway, approaching him, Adrien's immediately on guard.
The footsteps are oddly quiet. In this room's acoustics, any sound should echo across the walls, alerting anyone, but Adrien has to put in effort to hear them clearly. Their quietness is practiced.
"Who's there?" Adrien says, pivoting in place.
Someone's breath hitches. The footsteps stop; the person's still shrouded in darkness.
"I said, who the hell's there???" His heart starts to race. Is this an intruder? Adrien does the stupidest thing possible: he whips his hand back and flings his half-eaten croissant in the direction of the sound.
And then the croissant's back in his hand.
Like he never even threw it in the first place.
And, of course, Giorno Giovanna steps out of the shadows, bending at the waist slightly as he apologizes. "Forgive me. I didn't think anyone else would be awake at this hour." Golden hair spills over his shoulders. Much longer than you'd expect, when it's out of its braid. Still so gorgeous, even in the dim lighting. Adrien's heart starts to race, but this time, not out of fear. More out of... a feeling that he'd yet to explore in its entirety, and that he didn't particularly want to explore. A feeling that was growing with time.
"Y-yeah, it's fine," Adrien says, shaken.
"I apologize if I startled you."
He takes another bite of the croissant; what? He's still hungry. "Oh, you didn't. Cat powers, you know. Although you were much quieter than I would've expected."
