Odasaku let the cat nuzzle his neck. "He seems rather old," Odasaku remarked on the subway ride back.
"He is," Y/n agreed. "I met Tama 6 years ago, but he definitely wasn't a kitten when I met him. I'm not exactly sure how old he is, but he's old." She leaned close to Odasaku as she stroked the cat's head. Tama then jumped back onto her lap. He looked down at the immense amount of cat hair that now clung to his clothes and frowned. She laughed.
When going to the Lupin bar, you don't plan with your friends on what time to meet. You just go when you feel like it and your friends just either happen to be there or they don't. He said goodbye to her and made his way silently to the Buraiha's favorite bar and when he opened the door, he heard the familiar bell ring and smelled the nostalgic scents of cigarettes and saw the warm orange light that always greeted him as he stepped in from the humid darkness of the night.
"Finally," Dazai said from the barstool with a drink in his hand, leaving an empty seat reserved only for him.
"How did your mission go?" Ango asked politely as Odasaku sat down.
What an absurd question for Ango to ask. He knew full well that Odasaku mourned in the sufferings of others, and all missions for the Port Mafia didn't go without causing people to suffer. Or, Odasaku realized, Was this question a trap?
"We survived," He said. He almost always said that. He ordered a drink and it came promptly. He knew that Ango and Dazai knew Odasaku would never kill. The boss knew that as well. He was a low ranking mafia member, so it didn't matter if he spared lives.
Dazai sighed and swirled his drink around in the glass cup. "I know it's hard for you, Oda-kun. I don't know why, but you hate killing. It must have been hard for you to watch your beloved Y/n take a life in front of your eyes."
But how would the boss react if he were to find out his killing machine stopped killing? Would he punish Y/n? Or would he . . .
"Why does the boss like Y/n-kun so much, anyway?" Dazai wondered. "It's clear that she's important to him, for whatever foolish reason."
Ango stared at his drink. "I assume they have known each other for a long time, and the boss has found her useful. I am curious as to what plans he has for her now that she's in the mafia."
Dazai continued. "If his plan was to continue having Y/n-kun be his errand girl, that plan has already failed.""What do you mean?" Odasaku asked.
Dazai's lips went into a mischievous smirk. "You didn't let her kill the man the boss ordered her to kill, didn't you? You couldn't bear to watch your beautiful girl suffer and persuaded her to kill no longer, is that right?"
He glared at him, silent.
Ango looked at him with a warning glint in the eye. "Oda-kun, it's very dangerous to fall in love, especially when you're in the Port Mafia. Haven't you seen what love has done? Kouyou-san loves Chuuya-kun far too much. Maybe not in a romantic way, but most definitely in a motherly way. She's a remarkable woman, but sometimes love for her subordinates gets in the way of the job and clouds her judgement. Or Higuchi-kun when it comes to Akutagawa-kun. She admires and respects him too much to the point where she loses sight of what's important. Haven't you noticed? Even her subordinates are losing respect for her."
Dazai tossed his head back. "Ango-kun's right. If love is a drug, then what's rehabilitation therapy for it?"
Odasaku said, "I don't love her. So you don't need to worry."
Well, he did want to see her again. But, you know, work gets in the way, and stuff. Yeah, it was work. Blame it all on work. That's why I couldn't see you for a couple weeks. It was work's fault. There was just no time. No time! And that's that.
