At the end of the day, when all jobs were taken care of, Odasaku habitually made his way to Lupin's in that misty night. Stepping slowly and serenely, he approached the homely door and stopped. He breathed deeply. Dazai was in there. Dazai, that utter hurricane of a mess who broke and destroyed and tore everything apart and was Odasaku's dear friend.
Of course, he had a policy to never use the term 'friend' lightly.
The door swung open and there was Dazai. He was sitting there contentedly, with his eyes closed and his lips in a slight smile, softly tracing the details of his glass with one hand, resting his chin in the other, swaying side to side ever so slightly to the music playing scratchily on the gramophone. Sometimes, Dazai wasn't a hurricane. He didn't break everything apart sometimes. At times like these, he was simply dusk, and dusk doesn't break anything because it's already broken.
"Hey," Odasaku said and sat down beside him, noticing the calico cat that often stared at them as they drank.
Dazai didn't seem to hear him. The dim, golden light of the place softly kissed his face. Dusk. It was dusk now.
They were silent for a long, long time. Only listening to the slow music and the jaunty voice that sang with it.
Then Dazai moved, removing his hand from under his chin. His eyes stayed closed. "I'm sorry."
"For what?"
And he was quiet again.
The bell above the door chimed timidly and Ango stepped in. He analyzed the two. "Rather quiet today, are we?" Ango turned his attention to the waiter. "I'm driving today, so, tomato juice, please." And he took his assigned seat.
"Hardly got any sleep at all last night," Dazai whined. "Had to wake up so early because people wouldn't keep quiet." He spun around in the stool.
"There was a shootout today.
"I was trading shots in a wearhouse block with an energetic crew armed with a machine-gun equipped truck!
"I had to go pee in the midst of it, then I tripped in a ditch because I was in such a hurry.
"As for those other guys, they ran away crying after I set up a trap and roughed them up a little.
"They're a pretty sorry bunch.
"Thanks to them, yet again was I unable to die.
"Are you on your way back from your job?" Dazai asked.
"It was a bad day," Ango lifted the strap of his satchel over his head and placed it on his lap properly. "It took far too long to buy these smuggled items.
"After haggling until after 8:00, the only thing to show for it is this antique watch," He lifted the flap to show Dazai.
"This concludes about 74% of transactions for this quarter.
"If I account for the 8% of existing organizations with which we've ever had any transactions, our profits have exceeded last year's by 34%.
"Perhaps it's thanks to the youngest executive in this organization's history.
"Of course, this summation includes today's disasterous deal."
He stopped talking to take a sip of his tomato juice.
Dazai turned to look at Odasaku. "We three've been drinking buddies for quite a time, yet we never hear you complain about your job."
"I wish not to bore you." Was all Odasaku said.
Dazai smiled piteously. "There he goes! Being all secretive again."
It's not like there was anything to be secretive about. It really was, as Odasaku said, boring. He was the lowest ranking member of the organization, or in other words, the janitor.
