"So, mind-reading?" I asked.
"Yep," Briar answered.
"He can read anyone's mind?" I asked.
"Anyone he chooses," Briar smiled.
"Every time it was like he was reading my mind, he was... When he wasn't paying attention and answered the question, he just read the professor's mind. He always knew what was going on in my head," I cried, "He knew all of my feelings?"
"Pretty much," a voice chimed in.
I looked up to see Mattheo leaning in the doorway.
"I don't know how to feel right now," I answered honestly.
"To be fair, he can't help that he was born with this power!" Briar said, trying to smooth things over.
"If I remember correctly, you said, "anyone he chooses". Meaning: he can choose whether he reads someone's mind or not. Correct?" I asked.
"Well..." Briar started.
"There's no sugarcoating it Briar," Mattheo said. Then, he switched his attention to me. "Yes, I chose to read your mind. Which is how I know that you have feelings for me no matter what you say!"
"That's not fair," I said.
"It was you!" Mattheo stated.
"Should I leave?" Briar asked.
"No!" Mattheo and I said in unison.
"What was me?" I asked.
"The potion!"
"What potion?"
"The amortentia potion," Mattheo replied.
"Ok? What about it?"
"I smelt you!"
"Wait~ what?" Briar butted in.
"Ssh!" we said in unison again.
"How do you know that?"
"Vanilla! Are you serious? You said it yourself that vanilla is your signature sense."
"Fine! Explain the rest of the scents then! Burning fire?" I argued.
"You love lighting candles! Plus, you are a burning fire. You're beautiful and unexpected. You love fire. I know you do. You think it's mysterious and beautiful. The way it dances from side to side in its own way."
"The only reason you know that is by reading my mind! You shouldn't know that!"
"But, I do! And, do I even have to explain the old books?!"
"Fine! You smelt me, but I didn't smell you!" I said, denying the truth.
"What's my favorite drink?" He asked, with a smirk forming on his lips.
"Firewhiskey? What does that have to do with anything?
"Ok, there's one. Who else smokes that you know?"
"I can't think of one. Why does it matter?"
"We have the same taste in books. Is that correct?"
"Yes?" I said in confusion.
"You smelled firewhiskey, smoke, and old books, and I just made you admit that you smelt me! Just admit it!"
"Fine! I like you. I might even love you, but I don't want to admit that I love you because if I do, then you can break my heart easily. If I lie to myself and everyone else, it might hurt less when you leave!"
"I'm not going to leave," Mattheo assures me.
"Everyone leaves!"
"I promise! I'm not going to!"
I didn't say anything. I couldn't. All I could do was cuddle into Mattheo's chest as he pulled me into a hug. The smell of everything I had smelt from the amortentia rushed to my nose, and I had no complaints.
