Author's Note: Credit to @pxstelwritesthings and @Lightningstar22 for letting me use their female Voltaris OCs. For the purpose of the story, I did have to tweak their personalities a little bit, but most of the credit still goes to them.
The front door looked so scary in its peeling white paint and the clay pots that stood on either side of it. The mood was scarier with a welcome mat in front. The rain thundered with force; a storm had come down from the north.
The door was locked, and the singly window built into it was covered by the small blinds that had been installed on it. The door was quite menacing indeed.
This was anything but a farmhouse. The Voltaris had disguised herself as a tramp, wandering like one that any other would view as a fool. This was no mistake however, for her target was already within sight. There at the entrance stood two Legionnaires, both of them standing guard. They both had pistols by their sides from what she could see through her binoculars.
"Smart lads," She murmured softly.
She wielded a Protisium song that generated a massive shield in front of her. It only appeared on one side, but it would be enough. Even still, stealth was of utmost importance here. In the rain, she needed every opportunity to enter the lone building.
The Voltaris slowly crept towards it, lurking in the shadows under the black tarp that covered her.
One of the Legionnaires turned the lights off, immediately returning to his position. All of them waited silently, hiding behind the furniture, watching the door with anticipation.
"Damn this rain," One of them whispered.
"Quiet," The one next to him hissed.
They watched as a shadow appeared through the window in the door. And soon enough, three loud bangs issued from outside.
The Voltaris' Protisum shield activated in the nick of time, deflecting the bullets from the two guards. Without wasting a moment, she fired twice with her Aggressium bolt. One of the guards instantly went down, but the other simply fell to his knees, clutching his leg. His gun fell out of his hand, and the Voltaris immediately rushed forward, swiping it before the Legionnaire could retrieve it.
"Song wielding is illegal, you know that?" The Legionnaire spat.
"Then I'll just use this instead," The Voltaris replied, pointing the gun at the Legionnaire's head.
The Legionnaire scowled.
"Do it," He sneered in a low voice. "Live up to your reputation. You Ardoni have nothing else to do to our families after all."
The Voltaris' features contorted, an expression of pain forming on her own face. But just like that, it disappeared. She shook her head simply before firing.
The Legionnaires waited in silence. Why this outpost in particular, none of them knew. All that mattered now was buying enough time till reinforcements arrived.
The shadow lingered before the door before disappearing. The other windows were all locked shut. They all looked for the silhouette, but in vain.
The waited for five minutes. And then ten. And then twenty.
"Should we check?" One of them finally asked.
All of them looked at each other, unsure. The Legionnaire slowly crept up to the door, peering through the blinds into the rain outside. He could hardly see anything.
