Lily shrugged on the last of her padding before she grabbed her broom from the wall and hurried outside. she hoped Harry and the Gryffindors had not started yet, otherwise Madam Hooch would be angry at both Lily for being late and the team for starting without a referee.

She was just leaving the locker room when she saw that the Slytherin Team equipment was also missing... oh no...

The girl picked up the pace until she came barreling into the clocktower courtyard just in time to see the Slytherin team approach the Gryffindors with sneers and... new brooms?

She hurried over to stand between Fred and George. Standing between the two red headed giants made Lily feel miniscule even while wearing her referee attire.

"Good thing you're here Lils," Fred muttered.

"This is getting ugly fast," George added.

Lily pushed through to the front and Oliver stopped his bickering with Marcus Flint.

"We will let Lily sort this out," Oliver said.

"Lily, today is Gryffindors' day to practice but Flint here says Professor Snape gave them leave to use the pitch!"

Lily raised her eyebrows. Was Oliver seriously going to turn to a second year to sort out a squabble? Flint however saved her from having to choose sides when he spoke up.

"We were given special privileges to practice today because of our new seeker."

"You have a new seeker?" Harry demanded, pushing past Lily so he did not have to be near her.

Flint smirked, "Yes indeed Potter."

With that, the Slytherins parted for their new seeker... who turned out to be none other than Draco Malfoy! Lily sighed. She knew that Quidditch would be a perpetual competition on a whole new level now thanks to Harry and Draco both being Seekers.

"Malfoy," Harry growled, confirming Lily's concern that things were going to get ugly.

"Potter," Draco sneered, leaning against his new black broom, "Scared much?"

Harry gnashed his teeth as Draco's stormy grey eyes drifted over to where Lily stood, and he grinned mischievously.

"Hello other Potter. Tell me, does being a siren mean you can swim with gills and a tail?"

Lily knew Draco was saying those things to rile Harry up but the boy seemed to not be aware of the rift between the Potter twins.

"No way," Ron gasped, interrupting the tense conversation, "Those are Nimbus 2001! Where did you get those?"

Flint sneered with pride, "A gift, from Draco's father."

"Unlike some, Weasley," Draco taunted, "My father can afford the best."

Hermione stepped over and Lily was ready to witness a test of the wits but what Hermione said next shocked her.

"Gee, I could seriously believe that except for the part where your father cannot even seem to buy you the best of friends in Lily. Is that why you are staring holes into her head every day in class? Because your father cannot afford the best even in friends?"

Everyone present except Fred and George looked utterly perplexed by what Hermione had said. Harry just rolled his eyes, not caring about what the girl meant and Draco's face had gone so red that his hair looked whiter than usual.

"I wasn't asking you. You filthy little mudblood," he growled in warning.

Several gasps rang out and Lily instinctively grabbed her wand but Ron beat her to it, drawing out his wand that was still cracked.
