For some reason, a bunch of writers love to give Y/n the most traumatic backstory, and there isn't necessarily anything wrong with doing that until you realize the only purpose for that trauma is to make Y/n look weak and needs the love interest to save them
Maybe if it was done well then this wouldn't be an issue, but it isn't. In most cases it never is because there is no character development
I'm not saying that you should take out all trauma for backstories. For some people who have been through similar trauma, it may be comforting
Context matters. If you're writing an x reader of a character from AOT, then yeah Y/n probably has some form of trauma. Everyone in the show does, but if you're writing a Haikyuu fic or a school AU fic. Y/n's parents don't have to brutally die in a horrific car crash.
Ask yourself these questions before giving Y/n a traumatic backstory
Is this necessary for the plot?
How does this affect Y/n?
Is this important for character development?
It's sad because the traumatic backstories get romanticized when they shouldn't be. Don't romanticize it. If you're including it, it better have a purpose. And that purpose better not be so the love interest can magically make it all better
If it doesn't have a purpose, you don't need it in your story
