My phone takes me out of my thoughts but when I see the caller ID my heart jumps and sinks at the same time.

"Hello?", I answer expectedly.

"Hey, Kiiara."

"Francesco, how are you? How's the mission?"

"Doing good beautiful, we closed the case. I'm honored to say we finally found closure for both your parents. Sergio was arrested and questioned by us. He's slowly but surely answering all loose ends. "

I let out a breath of relief. "That's amazing to hear."

"I know you were hoping for a call from Nile. He was shot in the arm by Sergio and is getting it treated right now. He'd call you but he's sedated. They are trying to get all the pieces of the bullet out."

"What? Is he-"

"Don't worry. He's fine, honestly. He's been shot before he knows how to handle it. I wanted to call you so you won't worry."

I look at Gabriel who can hear through the phone.

"Thank you Fran, honestly."

"I'll get him to call you when he can. "

"Of course. Take care of yourself. "

"Will do, bye Kiiara."

I cut the phone and bury my head in my hands.

"He did it. He closed the case. He did it."

"I knew he would. You did too."

I nod. "I still have to leave though."

"Kiiara-"

"I can't. I can't stay here and think everything is fine when this started off so bad. Gabe, I didn't come here on my own will. I can't fall in love with him without knowing it's me who's fallen in love and not just because I had no way out."

Gabe shifts in the bed to get a better look at me. "You know that's not true. You two fell for each other for real. "

"I need to make sure. We didn't start of healthy. I need this space to clear my head of this past whole year. "

"Nile really likes you. If you're not here when he comes back it's going to crush him."

Hearing those words breaks my heart and I struggle to inhale a breath.
"I don't want to crush him. I don't want to, but now that this is over I need to detach and get things together myself. "

"Where do you plan on going?"

"I found a small apartment. It's a good place for Jordan and I to stay and get away from all this. "

Gabe takes a deep breath. "You're really doing this?"

"I have to. It's the best idea. We didn't start healthy. I know we weren't toxic, he was surprisingly my calm, but detaching and starting off fresh is the right way."
