Before the chapter begins, I'd like to address something that has been bothering me (yes, it is a rant). So, many of you do not vote or even comment. As an author, I do need motivation, and the only way I know you lot are enjoying the book I am writing is when you leave some sort of feedback. I haven't updated in a while because I felt like no one even wants to read the book anymore. I hope you guys understand where I am coming from and start acting a bit more active?"What, Jaime?" Louis growls as the alpha remains in his place, the rest of the councilmen having walked out of the courtroom. They had been discussing the crisis arising due to the progressing winter, each of the men raising their concerns about the survival of the people when in the future even the Tiranian-lent grains won't be enough. The sitting today wasn't of much help, only consisting of quarrels between the councilmen while Louis sat staring, suppressing his spiralling disdain for each of them present there.
But now Jaime's standing in the empty courtroom, looking at Louis as everyone has left them to quietness, the townhouse eerily cold and lifeless. Jaime sighs and moves closer, his tall physique hunched as his dejected eyes meet Louis'. "He does not deserve this, Louis." He says, a tentative hand on Louis' shoulder. Louis exhales shakily, the clench of his heart painful, his gaze cast down with the weight of guilt.
"Do you perceive that I am not aware of that?" He whispers, glancing at the empty hallway past the door. "I feel his ache, too. However, I can't," he gulps, fighting back the wetness that's beginning to fill his eyes. "I can't lie to his face anymore."
"He is carrying a pup inside of him, for heaven's sake!" Jaime bellows, voice harsh and scent sparked with hints of bitterness. Louis looks at him wide-eyed, having never seen the alpha misbehave with him. "You'll kill him, Louis. You'll have the blood of both your mate and pup on your hands! I can smell his misery. I can not have you watch him die because you did not have enough courage to confess to the truth."
"Do not speak such dirt. N-n-nothing'll harm either of them."
"Be honest with thyself, prince, that is the least you can do." The laugh that reaches Louis' ears drips with acrimony, and Louis realises the weight of truth that lies in the words Jaime has spoken. He isn't a fool, far from it, and he senses the anguish his omega is in, the perpetual ache he is in, his craving for Louis' touch, Louis' love, Louis' mere presence. But how can Louis face him? Speak lies while being looked at with eyes that hold such deep trust in them?
"You can tell him the truth," Jaime speaks just above a light whisper, his comforting hand gone as he stumbles into a chair while attempting to egress.
"It is not as untroublesome."
"It isn't worth losing your mate either."
