It was fine for Basil to admire Sunny from afar. He wasn't sure of his feelings at first, but he eventually came to terms with it -- that he's in love with him.
Of course, it wasn't the 'norm' for them to like boys. Basil was scared his friends wouldn't accept him if he told anyone, so he kept it hidden. Even though it was the most natural thing for him.
He wasn't sure where to put his frustrated feelings, so he kept a diary whenever he felt intense emotions. Most of the entries were because of Sunny.
January 19th
I can't stand Sunny anymore. Everything he does, I just fall in love even more. Is this normal? Is this even actually love? I don't know. I just want to stay by his side all the time. Though I'm not sure...if liking your best friend is right...I don't wanna ruin things for us. It's even worse when you realise we're both boys...they'll think I'm weird, right? To like boys. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
Basil got startled by the knock on his door. It was Polly.
"Basil? Sunny's here. He wants to hang out."
Of all the times, it had to be today when he's feeling intensely. He needs to calm himself down before facing him. Looking at the mirror, he slapped himself gently, to hopefully knock some sense into him. It's just Sunny. His best friend.
He went out of his room to the living room. He's there, watching TV, eating the snacks Polly made.
"There you are! I've been waiting for 5 years," he said.
"That was 5 minutes."
"...eh, I still waited." He took a bite. "Come sit."
"W-What?"
"I bought the live adaptation CD of Capt. Spaceboy! Let's watch together."
Ah, Basil thought. It wasn't anything. I'm just thinking things.
So he sat.
"We're almost 17 and you still like Capt. Spaceboy?" Basil teases.
"No one is too old for heroes, you know. Look at Kel, he's still obsessed with his childhood favorites. And we're still kids if you think about it. Hero said life as an adult isn't that fun, so let's enjoy youth for now."
Basil was quiet for a bit, and Sunny noticed this.
"You okay?"
He spaced out again. "Y-Yeah! I just...what you said makes me feel like you've really grown over the years. You feel mature."
The boy gets flustered at the sudden compliment, facing away from him. "Don't just say things like that!"
"..Hm?" Basil tilts his head slightly, confused. But he thought Sunny was making a very cute expression.
"Let's just watch the show."
--
Basil thought the movie was boring, but it's probably because he's already grown out of his Capt. Spaceboy phase. Sunny still seems to really like it though, so he didn't mind watching through the whole thi--Wait!
"This little rascal," he said. Sunny was asleep.
He turned off the TV and brought out a blanket for him. He slowly laid Sunny's head down the couch so he wouldn't hurt his neck sleeping in a sitting position.
"He fell asleep?" Polly laughed.
"Yeah, and I thought I was getting bored."
"Still the same old Sunny. He's cute, isn't he?"
Cute...?
He looked at him, his sleeping face. He turned away.
"I-I guess."
Night came. Why does time go by so fast?
Basil found himself playing with Sunny's hair. It was very soft. Back then when they were kids, they'd always play with everyone's hair. They especially loved Mari's, though.
Sunny groaned, and the blond feared he might've woken him up. Sunny grabs his hand, putting it on his cheek.
"E-Eh!? Sunny --"
"Warm,"
"Huh?"
Sunny opened his eyes. "It's cold, and you're warm."
Basil's face started flushing; he could feel the heat on his cheeks. He wasn't sure if the redness was showing, but either way, he doesn't wanna face Sunny right now. He took his hand away and stood up.
Sunny yawned, sitting up. He looked at the window. Night already, he thought.
"I better get going. Kel's mom might be waiting for me for dinner."
Oh -- that's right. He's staying with Kel and Hero for a month before he leaves again. Somewhere far away...
"See you tomorrow, Basil."
"Yeah, see you."
He waved and left.
Basil just wanted to plop into his bed right now.
Warm. He looked at his hand. You make me feel warm inside.
